NEW IN BOOKSSirdar Book 331
Over the years we have discovered how our customers appreciate a good straight-forward book of simple knitting patterns that they can make up as is or use as a basis to develop their own designs. Sirdar, the king of knitting patterns, has brought out an excellent book just for you. SIMPLE EASY KNITS (Book 331) is a wonderful collection of pullovers, cardigans, vests and hoodies. Designed in the ever practical DK weight of yarn and sized to fit from kid's size 6 to a finished chest of 50" this versatile book is sure to become a standard in our store. The Illustrator

The latest book from Mags Kandis of Mission Falls is called THE ILLUSTRATOR and features a lovely selection of garments and bags in their wonderful 1824 COTTON. Mags is a big fan of encouraging creativity in her knitters and as an added bonus in this book she has included knitters' grids proportioned perfectly for the uneven row/stitch count that makes regular graph paper impossible for knitters to use in creating their own design.
Love to Knit Socks

LOVE TO KNIT SOCKS is subtitled: "35 FUN socks, legwarmers and booties you will love to knit," and they aren't kidding. I've seen things in this book that I've seen nowhere else: tiny fairisle Turkish mini-socks, argyle knee socks, above the knee gardening socks complete with leather knee patches, tall lace cuff socks to wear over the top of your boots, and stirrup legwarmers for the dancers in your family. What a collection of variety and ideas.
Also available is the newest in the LITTLE BOX pattern series: LITTLE BOX OF SOCK PATTERNS which looks lovely from what I've seen of it but we sold our first copies before I had a chance to get a good look. More will be arriving soon.
knitting gooseIn honour of Mothers Day...
I went looking for something on the theme of mothers knitting and found the story of Borka. This book is about a goose born with no feathers, who is teased and alienated by other geese. Her mother knits her a 'suit' of feathers, but it's not much good when Borka is learning to swim. The woman who posted this book on her blog noted that she found it in a recycling centre so I'm not sure if it's even still in print. But it's sweet to think of a mom who would knit her darling a whole suit of feathers. (I bet she even figures out an alternative for a swimming suit.) Let's hear it for moms!
Socks for Spring!
Lana Grossa Primo sock
This picture is of my single sock as described on my blog and it's made of Lana Grossa's PRIMO sock yarn, the latest of our self-patterning sock yarns which comes in a great variety of springtime colours. Get 'em while you can.

Cascade FIXATION is always a favourite for tennis socks. A great blend of cotton and spandex makes this a practical yarn for those who love the feel of cotton against their skin.

Last month we introduced On Your Toes BAMBOO SOCK YARN and promptly ran out due to a problem at the supplier's warehouse. Since that time, we have received other shipments and it was a great seller for us at the recent Needlecraft Show and Sale that I attended. Give it a try, you'll love it's soft feel and bamboo's important properties of wicking away moisture and preventing odour. A perfect combination for hot feet.
muffinsPLEASE JOIN US ON SATURDAY, MAY 3RD FROM 9:30-NOON for coffee, tea and muffins as we welcome friends from the MONTREAL KNITTERS' GUILD.
A couple of our customers have a friend in Montreal whom they had long ago introduced to the WOOL-TYME Kingston store, and who herself has become a faithful customer. She, along with a group of friends from Montreal Knitter's Guild, are coming to spend a fun weekend enjoying our wonderful city and visiting the WOOL-TYME Kingston store on Saturday morning.
We'd love to welcome all of our customers to come and show off our warm Kingston Knitters' hospitality so please feel free to drop in this Saturday morning (May 3rd) for a cup of coffee and a homemade muffin (or 2).

By the way -- Isn't this a good idea from the Montreal group: to take a weekend away from our sometimes crazy lives and enjoy each other's company. Do you have out-of-town crafting friends who would like to get together and visit Kingston. I'm hoping to approach Tourism Kingston to offer a Knitting Visitor's package of information and coupons for the city but I would love some input re groups who would be interested. Any ideas???
moth
KNOW THINE ENEMY
As the warm weather arrives, take time to store your precious winter sweaters to avoid seeing me in the fall for tips on dealing with dreaded moth holes. Here are a few tips on storing your knits from Interweave KNITS magazine, Spring 2008.
-Store only clean garments. Insects prefer dirty garments as they need the carbohydrates in the soiled areas.
-Mothballs stink, can be carcinogenic, are not effective in low concentrations and can cause colour changes. Avoid them if you can.
-Consider placing textiles that you suspect of being infested, and wool that you really care about in the freezer.
-Plastic containers are the best barriers to insects. Place your garments in a pillow case inside the plastic container to avoid direct contact which may cause discolouration.

knitting in public
ATTENTION KNITTERS OF KINGSTON...
International KNIT IN PUBLIC DAY is scheduled for  Saturday June 14th and I believe that we should do something to participate in this great event. Any ideas anyone????
What about taking over the patio at SIPPS Coffee Bar across from Market Square? That way we could make our presence felt both in the establishement  AND among the Saturday afternoon shoppers.
Now I realize that the lady in the picture above has set a rather high standard for knitting in public, considering that on the larger version of the picture you can see that she is wearing a fur collar along with her very stylish hat. But don't let her intimidate you. Circle your calendar for June 14th and know that somewhere in the city of Kingston there will be a band of knitters getting together to mark their special day. I'll keep you posted in the next newsletter and on the WOOL-TYME Kingston blog.

"Sometimes new designers expect their designs to come out perfectly the first time, but, it's natural and enjoyable for a design to evolve over time. It's especially enjoyable when you love the yarn involved."
Cynthia MacDougall, Canadian Guild of Knitters.
                          Linus
PROJECT LINUS like many of the volunteer organizations around town who depend on students for a portion of their work, PROJECT LINUS is once again needing a kind soul who would have a few hours every couple of weeks to sew labels and fold blankets for presentation to the kids.  Basic hand sewing skills and transportation are all you need. Please give us a call if you can help out! 613-384-3951
Knitting Pattern Central

Our regular readers will know that we generally try and feature an exclusive WOOL-TYME Kingston Free Pattern at the bottom of our newsletter and this pattern is found at our pattern site which has been steadily growing in popularity since it began a year ago. We get about 200-300 visitors each day to the site and have comments and questions from people across Europe and the US and Canada.
The main reason for the site's popularity is due to the links that come from Knitting Pattern Central which lists free patterns from all over the net. Give it a try. There's lots to keep you busy.
(By the way, considering the article at left here, don't you think that it's a little perverse that they would use a moth as their mascot on their logo above??? Oh Well.)

Next Meeting of the KINGSTON KNITTING CIRCLE is at Chapters in their Community Room on Tuesday May 20th,

from 7-9pm.

WELCOME TO ALL!!!

The fast and easy: POCKET PURSE

pocket purse
This truly is a great little gift to whip up for anyone (even yourself). And it's as practical as it is simple and easy to knit.Using 2 strands of Lang's MALIBU or Mission Falls new WHIRL 1824 Cotton held together will give this lovely multicoloured effect. Knitted on small needles, the fabric is firm enough to carry all your necessities without needing a lining. And don't be worried about knitting with 2 strands, it's easy. You don't even notice the difference after the 2nd row.
