SOCKS, SOCKS, SOCKS FOR SPRING!
We're having a bit of a feast when it comes to sock yarn these days. The long awaited KUREYON SOCK YARN from Noro has just arrived and is every bit as beautiful as the picture here. 12 colours combinations to make your head spin. Don't miss out. These will go fast.
From S.R. Kertzer, comes an answer for those of you who are looking for an alternative to woolen socks, suitable for those with delicate feet or for summertime wearing. ON YOUR TOES 4 ply Bamboo sock yarn. 75% Bamboo and 25% nylon, this machine washable yarn is a pure delight to work with and feels wonderful to wear. See all the lovely gentle shades and the great patterns featured in this book #406.
And from REGIA, the grandaddy of the excellent European sock yarn industry, has come the cutest stuff I've ever seen called Regia SOFTY. Made of 39% wool, 61% nylon, the gentle fuzz on this yarn will make them a hit with anyone who loves the coziness of something soft against their feet. (Great for mitts, hats, and check out the Regia JOURNAL which features a couple of amazing sweaters in this lovely yarn.) |
OTHER NEW YARNS to tempt you THIS SPRING.
All of you who have been such fans of the wonderful self-striping yarns that are available for socks will be thrilled to see Katia's new SAMBA.This lovely DK pure cotton works well with so many of our summer patterns for both adults and kids. Everyone will think you've spent hours working out colour schemes for your new summer tops. Come and see our beautiful baby bolero style jacket, from Katia Book 44.
New from Ella rae is another great cotton product called BABY COTTON DK. It's so new to us that we haven't had time to knit up a swatch and test wash it, but with the 12% nylon blended with the 88% cotton, I can guess that it will wash beautifully. Soft gorgeous colours too.
And for just a bit of fun from Needful Yarns, we have brought in ELBA, a beautiful light ribbon yarn, in a shimmering array of multicolours that would work perfectly in our FREE ribbon shawl pattern (available at the store). |
New BOOKS
Just as I was beginning to wonder if we were going to have any new books to tell you about this month, we received a shipment from Nova Yarns with 4 great new additions to our book collection.
This first one is an amazing collection of 19 beautiful designs for the whole family from SUBLIME, knitted in DK cotton. There are at least 3 patterns in here that I would make for myself. It's one of the nicest summer knitting books to come out in a long time.
Elsebeth Lavold just keeps getting better, with the arrival of Book 14: The Dreamweaver Collection. She is the queen of combining style and classic beauty.
Ella rae's Book 9 brings a youthful look to interesting knitting. It will appeal to those amazing young knitters who are developing their skills in all facets of knitting.
And finally, Auracania's WINTER JEWELS is perhaps not the title that we want to be reading about in April, but it is a beautiful collection of sweaters in multi hued midweight yarns that seduce everyone who comes into the store. Check this book out to get a head start on the fall. |
Fun Things for Spring!
Can you guess what these are?
They are 2 of many of the items in the felt works collection from Dimensions Crafts that allow you to customize all of your needlecraft projects in a flash.
By the way, the green "worm" on the left is a spiral bracelet. Come and see how we dressed it up with beaded felted balls, which are also available in this series. And the felted cabbage rose on the right would be stunning on any purse or jacket. |
Things I came across (to cheer me up) as I was browsing in cyber space on a snowy Sunday in March.
This sock monkey hat is featured on the Yarn Harlot's most recent post. It comes from Knitty.com and you can link to the pattern by clicking on the picture. Angela Martinelli is a nurse who has brought her smiles and her knitting to Honduras in a very special way. Link to her story above.
Mind of Winter Archives has a lovely post identifying socks as the "short story" of the knitting world.
" Stitch 'n Bitch" in Wikipedia brings us the whole scoop on the originS of this phenomenon. Debbie Stoller's book really does continue to be one of the most popular books that we sell. Strange, since the publication of the first in the series of books in 2003, 5 years has passed, which I would have thought would be an eternity in the FAD world, but knitters, young and old, keep rediscovering this very trendy series.
The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) is where you need to go to keep up on the progress of Julia Roberts most recent project, where she will be playing the curly haired (what else?) Georgia Walker, owner of Walker & Daughter Yarn Store on New York's Upper West Side. The book is a great read and fills one with all kinds of ideas for what we, as a knitting community, could do to welcome the arrival of this fun story when it does hit the silver screen. (It's my understanding that Julia had to take a little time off to produce a baby before she could get down to the business of producing the movie.) |
NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK IS April 27th to May 3rd.
PROJECT LINUS thanks all of our hundreds of knitters crocheters, quilters, piecers, deliverers, folders and recipients for making this such a worthwhile project.
And don't forget... SPRING CLEANING IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER. Please remember PROJECT LINUS when trying to figure out if you really do need that bag of Baycrest Sayelle that you bought in the last century.

MICROTRENDS
Mark J. Penn, polling advisor to both of the Clintons, and Tony Blair among others, has in his most recent book: MICROTRENDS, identified over 70 groups within western society that are relatively small forces which are bringing big changes for tomorrow.
And one of those identified groups is TEENs and early 20's KNITTERS.
He notes the appeal to young people, that by connecting through internet knitting chat groups, they are making knitting more social. But more than that, he points out that we live in a society that wants to customize everything from our coffee to our cars, and young people are foremost among those who want to assert their individualism.
Let's hear it for the young and young at heart who are wanting the pleasure of creating something themselves and being able to say, "I made that." |
LET'S WIND THINGS UP!
Just wanted to remind you of our "winding" centre" that is offered at WOOL-TYME Kingston, where customers can come and wind the skeins of yarn that they've just purchased into wonderfully easy to handle centre pull balls. We're just here to make your knitting life a little more pleasant.
