Jose GonzalezPresident's Message

By: José González

We are in October already, and summer does not to want to end!  The same can be said about me not wanting my presidency of the HBA to end.  However, in the next couple of months, my presidency will end and give way to the presidency of Mayte Santacruz and a new group of directors that you will elect next month to continue to shepherd the HBA towards new success.
Nominations for the Executive Officers and Board of Directors have been submitted and will be accepted through October 5th.  If you or someone you know is interested in shaping this organization for the years to come, please submit their name to info@ochba.org.
I would also like to thank again everyone who attended the Annual Judges' BBQ on September 23rd where Associate Justice David Thompson was honored as the Jurist of the Year.  A special thanks to our event sponsor Union Bank for their generous support.
At the Judges BBQ, we also unveiled the destination for next year's annual Memorial Day Weekend MCLE Trip-Quepos, Costa Rica!!!!  This trip is booking very fast and the MCLE program being organized promises to continue the excellence for which the HBA trips have been known.

2012-2013 Wally Davis Scholarship Application Available!

Did you know that Latinos constitute almost 50% of California's population, yet less than 4% of California's attorneys are Latino? To bridge this gap, the HBA Annual Scholarship Fundraiser and Installation Dinner raises funds for the Wallace (Wally) R. Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Orange County Latino students who are presently attending law school and who have demonstrated involvement in the Latino Community. The Scholarship Fund was named in honor of Wallace (Wally) R. Davis, one of the first Hispanic attorneys in Orange County. He rose to the highest ranks in the legal profession, co-founding the HBA and championing the struggles of the Latino community. By assisting young Latino law students, this scholarship is awarded to those who would follow in his footsteps.

Applications will be reviewed by the HBA Scholarship Committee. Please note the following dates:
October 31, 2012: Application deadline. All materials must be postmarked by this date.
November 30, 2012: Notification of scholarship awards will be mailed by this date.
