Jose GonzalezPresident's Message

By: José González

The Puerto Rican sun beamed beautifully for the five days that the HBA was in San Juan for the annual Memorial Day Weekend MCLE Trip.  I was dismayed to hear the weather reports called for thunderstorm showers in the days leading to the trip.  But the sunshine that greeted us on the tarmac of the San Juan International Airport set the mood for the fabulous weekend to follow.

The HBA's trip is renowned for its exemplary CLE programs, and this year's coalition of speakers did not disappoint.  We brushed up on topics such as fiduciary duties between spouses in Family Law to Statute of Limitations in Criminal Law.  Our attendees' imaginations flirted with what could be an episode of "San Juan CSI," with Judge Shelly Torrealba's captivating expose on the LAPD detective Stephanie Lazarus cold case murder conviction.  Of course, Justice Carlos Moreno (Ret.) and Nate Scott (research attorney, Court of Appeal, 4th District, Div. 3) provided great insight into the appeal writ process.  Thank you to all of our speakers and trip attendees for making this trip such a wonderful experience.

I would also be remiss if I did not thank the law firm of McConnell & Valdés in San Juan, Puerto Rico for their warm hospitality and hosting of our MCLE seminar.

On another no less important note, I would like to express my congratulations to our President-Elect Mayte Santacruz Benavidez who will be honored as the Attorney of the Year at the Public Law Center's Volunteers for Justice 2012 Annual Dinner on June 18th.  Mayte is being honored for her incredible commitment of more than 1,000 hours of pro bono legal services provided through PLC (with the support of her firm Latham & Watkins LLP) assisting victims of domestic violence and other serious crimes.

Congratulations Mayte!  Your services as an attorney to your clients have made an imaginable difference in their lives and in the lives of their children.  Please join the HBA on June 18th to celebrate along with Mayte.
