Jose GonzalezPresident's Message

By: José González

Saturday night's 34th Annual Installation Dinner & Scholarship Fundraiser felt like Christmas morning all over again.  I had the sense of preparing for the dinner for so long and then it happened all in a blink of an eye.  I have to say though, it was a memorable blink.

We were privileged to hear inspirational speeches by our honorees that evening.  Equally so, our scholar Danila Toscano shared memorable remarks underscoring the importance of the bond created through mentorship.  Our other scholar, Stephanie Delgado, could not attend due to her demanding school schedule, but her father proudly recited the remarks written by his daughter thousands of miles away at Cornell Law School.

The legal community came out in full force to support the HBA and generously contributed to our fundraising efforts.  For a moment during the dinner, I paused to see the donation messages on the big screen and saw a donation texted in from "Rick Santorum" - it was surely a sign that our guests enjoyed themselves.

So now days after our Tributo Tequila toast, an exquisite meal, and nonstop dancing, the rest of the year is being planned by the HBA, and every step of the way, we will carry out the promise to re-energize our presence in the Latino community.

We invite our members and friends to take part in the many events and activities that we have planned for this exciting year.  In the next couple of weeks, we will begin by marking the path for attorneys interested in becoming judges by holding a judge workshop at the Orange County Superior Court designed to demystify the judicial appointments process.  In April, we will hold a reception to reconnect and learn more about Human Options, the Guardian de Justicia honoree.  Just about the time that our other honoree, Arte Moreno, settles into the new season at Angels Stadium, the HBA will be traveling North to join our colleagues and friends from the Mexican American Bar Association in an annual softball tournament.  The month of May will be kicked off with our famed Cinco de Mayo De Barranda mixer.  The pina coladas will continue to be the drink of choice at the Memorial Day Weekend MCLE Trip to Puerto Rico where Justice Carlos Moreno (ret.) will headline the panel of speakers.  Also, soon we will send out a call to our members and friends to volunteer at local Latino middle schools and high schools in Orange County in an effort to provide tangible examples of opportunity to the youth in our community.

I'm confident that this year will be as successful and memorable as the Installation Dinner and with your help the HBA will continue to mark the path to success.

Thank you.
