Jose GonzalezPresident's Message

By: Jos Gonzlez

2012 is a leap year! This means that the Dinner Committee has one EXTRA day to finalize the planning of the 34th Annual Installation Dinner and Scholarship Fundraiser on March 3rd.

It means that we have one extra day to make sure that the Tributo Tequila is readied to be poured for our renowned 'Tequila Toast' to kick off the dinner program.  It's one extra day for the mariachi to refine their repertoire of music to serenade our guests while they enjoy browsing and viewing the many items that will be displayed at the silent auction.  That will also give one extra day for Charanga Cubana to polish their brass hardware that will trumpet the treble and bass notes and rhythm beats to motivate our feet up onto the dance floor during the post-dinner reception.

Unfortunately, it also means that it's one more day that we will have to wait to applaud the many successes of our dinner's honorees.  We will anxiously await ACLU's Hector Villagra, Angels' owner Arte Moreno, The Coca-Cola Company's Rudy Bessera, and Human Option's Maricela Rios-Faust and Vivian Clecak's triumphant moment as each is heralded.  This means too that our very deserving law student Wally Davis Scholars will not yet enjoy the feeling of being enveloped with the warmth and kindness of the HBA, for one more day.

Personally, I have to admit that I'm perplexed about this leap year.  Like many that preceded me, I'm anxious about taking my place among the many fine leaders that our Latino community has exalted to the presidency of the HBA.  All the while, I'm humbled at the thought of the responsibility which accompanies that honor.

I have to admit, I wish I could talk to the Mayans about making a few changes to their 2012 calendar.

I look forward to what I'm sure will be a memorable night for all of us and look to your support in making it a success.
