Meet Genoveva Meza Talbott A Final Note From The President

By: Genoveva Meza Talbott

It's hard to believe that the year is nearly over...and even more impossible to believe that I will soon hang up my hat as HBA President.  This has been a role that I have enjoyed thoroughly.  I had experiences that molded me and made friendships that I will cherish for years to come.

We started off the year by co-hosting a timely Commemoration Session of the Mendez et al v. Westminster School District et al case at the Federal Courthouse.  We put on an unforgettable annual dinner, a record-breaking travel seminar to Belize, a judges' barbecue, a softball tournament, golf clinics, de Barranda mixers, and a CLE by UCI School of Law Dean, Erwin Chemerinsky.  I'm extremely proud of our successful outreach to other bar organizations.  We forged those relationships by hosting a mixer with our colleagues from MABA, co-hosting a civil rights event with OCLBA, and hosting a huge End of Summer Mixer, which included the impressive support of six local bar organizations.  Our continuous mission of improving bench-bar relations was evident by the presence and support of the bench at all of these events.  And perhaps our most shining achievement was the fulfillment of our HBA theme this year, "Investing in Tomorrow," which we did by awarding $14,000 in scholarships, and not only reviving, but greatly expanding, the HBA Mentoring program, which now serves high school, college and law school students.  Of course, just last week we ended the year with our Annual Holiday Party, where the HBA displayed its generous spirit by donating gifts to benefit KidWorks.

Of course, there was much more that we did, and just as many things that we wanted to do.  But as I reflect on 2011, I am proud to think that Orange County had more exposure to the HBA through collaborations, by attending our many events, or simply by reading our Newsletters, website or social pages.  I am thankful that I can leave my post feeling confident that through our efforts this year, we advanced our mission of promoting education, unity, and excellence in the Hispanic legal community.  I hope you will join me in continuing to support the HBA in 2012. Personally, I look forward to serving on the HBA board in 2012 in the capacity of Immediate Past President.

Signing off for the year with warm wishes for a happy holiday season and a prosperous new year.
