Meet Genoveva Meza Talbott A Note From The President

By: Genoveva Meza Talbott

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, my first Thank You goes out to all the candidates that heeded the call and ran for a leadership position in this year's Board of Directors and Officer Elections.  And my second Thank You is for all of the members that voted.  We will announce the results at our upcoming Holiday Party on December 8, 2011, at the Green Parrot Villa in Santa Ana (see below for details).  It will be a fun way to celebrate the holiday season, thank the outgoing members of the Board, and meet the 2012 leadership.  Join us!

The last Board meeting of the HBA took place this week, and we are tremendously Thankful for the work we were able to carry out this year.  Thank You to the Orange County community for all your support in our endeavors.

On behalf of the Board and the entire organization, Happy Thanksgiving.  See you at our Holiday Party!

Jose Gonzalez Marking the Path to Success

With 2011 starting to wind down, it marks the time that the HBA begins to wind up the planning for the 34th Annual Installation Dinner and Scholarship Fundraiser which will be held at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel on Saturday, March 3, 2012.

A call to the HBA membership was sent out to submit nominations for honorees for Attorney of the Year Award, Guardian de Justicia Award, Life Time Achievement Award, and Corporate Citizen Award.  If you have an exceptional person or corporation in mind for one of these awards, please email your nomination to info@ochba.org.

"Marking the Path to Success" is the theme for the 2012 Installation Dinner and will be echoed in our continued effort to grow the mentor program reignited under the presidency of Genoveva Meza Talbott.  Many of our current HBA members and officers have taken on the joyous responsibility of becoming mentors to some of our Orange County local law students through the HBA mentoring program which was kicked off at the Judge's BBQ in September.  It is our ambition that through the HBA mentoring program the law students will find their path to success more easily traveled with the guidance and encouragement of their mentor.

Soon, the sponsorship and donation materials for the Installation Dinner and Scholarship Fundraiser will be sent to our friends and supporters.  I urge you to consider reserving a place in your sponsorship budget for the HBA and help us continue in our mission to increase the presence of Latinos in the justice system and enrich the lives of the Hispanic community whom we serve.

I would encourage anyone interested in sharing with us their skills and talents by participating in the planning of the Installation Dinner and Scholarship Fundraiser to please contact me through email at info@ochba.org

Sincerely,

JOSE GONZALEZ
President Elect, Hispanic Bar Association of Orange County

HBA Going To "The Island Of Enchantment" In 2012

At the "El Día de los Muertos" (the Mexican Day of the Dead) de bar-randa, President-Elect José González announced, as is tradition, the destination for the 2012 Memorial Day HBA Travel Seminar: "We are going to Puerto Rico!," González revealed.  The 2012 MCLE trip will take place May 23- 28, 2012, and offers 5 Days/4 Nights at the InterContinental San Juan Resort and Casino, in Isla Verde, for the incredible HBA member price of $1492.00 (including roundtrip airfare and ground transportation).

The news was well received by the Day of the Dead revelers, but none may have been more delighted than HBA Board Member Javier Rivera-Carbone, a native of Puerto Rico.  In fact, Mr. Rivera-Carbone, who practiced law in San Juan before moving to San Clemente five years ago, will be an integral part of making this trip a successful venture.  "With Javier involved," explained González, "we have the inside track on the best areas, the best hotels, the best restaurants in San Juan."  He added, "And given the fact that he practiced law on the island, what better guide to introduce us to its legal system, law profession, judiciary."  Mr. Rivera-Carbone is a member of the 2012 trip committee.

HBA Revives The "Dead"

The HBA celebrated "El Día de los Muertos" (the Mexican Day of the Dead) with another successful de bar-randa night on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Chapter One in Santa Ana.  The dead revelers included, by tradition, the candidates seeking a spot on the 2012 HBA board of directors and several of the current board members.  Each of the candidates had a brief opportunity to stump for their election.

The attendees included Hon. David Velasquez, Hon. John Gastelum, as well as a coterie of HBA dignitaries, led by President Genoveva M. Talbott, President-Elect José González, Vice President Leo Paredes, and board members Ivan Cisneros, Aaron Flores, Martin Fontes, Diana López, Rafael Nendel-Flores, Javier Rivera-Carbone and Mayte Santacruz Benavidez.  Also in attendance were former HBA presidents Lorena Penaloza (2007), Norma García Guillén (2008) and Carlos X. Colorado (2010).

President Talbott expressed her gratitude to the three event sponsors, Bad Boy Bail Bonds, LifeSafer Ignition Interlock, and John MacDonald Insurance Services, Inc.  She also wished the HBA board candidates the best of luck and thanked them for stepping forward.

PLC Justice For All Clinic Day

On October 25, 2011, many volunteered through the Orange County Hispanic Bar Association (HBA) to participate in the Public Law Center's Justice For All Legal Clinic Day.  The event was created as part of the American Bar Association's weeklong National Pro Bono Celebration.  Through the donated efforts of volunteer attorneys, over 100 low income clients were served at free community legal clinics located throughout the county.

Among those participating from the OCHBA were board member and PLC staff attorney, Kristen Myers, as well as board member Lyo Figueroa.  Others who volunteered through the HBA were Mani Dabiri, Dominique Diaz, Nora Aponte-Woodring, Michelle Choi, Mirian Urias, Briana M. Kim, and Lilia Ballesteros.

Thank you to all who volunteered and who made it a successful event.
