A Note From The President
By: Genoveva Meza Talbott
It's election season! The time of year when the HBA, as well as other Bars, gear up to hold elections for leadership positions. The HBA is currently accepting nominations and is compiling a list of formidable candidates, all of whom are invited to attend our Dia de los Muertos Bar Review on November 2 (see details below) to introduce themselves to our members and announce their candidacy for office. If you are not a member, we call on you to join and be a part of this most important leadership process.
Though the Holidays are fast approaching, the HBA is not slowing down. This month we have proudly adopted the Public Law Center's "Justice for All" Legal Clinic in Santa Ana on October 25, and were a sponsor of this year's Legal Aid Society of Orange County's Great Wine Festival on October 15. Just last week, we joined with the OC Lavender Bar to host an Education Rally in Santa Ana. Our Fall Golf Clinic is scheduled for November 13, and the Annual Holiday Party is set for December 8, 2011.
So, I invite you not only to be a part of the HBA's many upcoming events, but also to consider dropping your name in the hat in the coming elections. Speaking from my own experience, sitting on this Board, is rewarding - both professionally and personally. It has been a pleasure serving |
Dear Friend of the OC HBA,
Please join us in participating in the Public Law Center's Justice for All Legal Clinic Day on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 during the ABA's National Pro Bono Week. The OCHBA has committed to "adopting" the Santa Ana clinic location on-site at the Public Law Center (PLC) at 601 Civic Center Drive West, Santa Ana, CA, 92701. See above flyer for RSVP information.
Thank you for your interest in pro bono legal work and for your continued support of the OCHBA!

HBA Co-Sponsors Dolores Huerta Event For Fair Education
A mix of teachers, activists, celebrities and members of the Hispanic Bar Association of Orange County ("HBA") and O.C. Lavender Bar turned out for a rally featuring 2011 Guardián de Justicia honoree Dolores Huerta, who spoke on behalf of the FAIR Education Act. The event was co-sponsored by a diverse coalition of local organizations, including the HBA and the Lavender Bar, and was held at Original Mike's in Santa Ana on Thursday, October 13. Latino celebrity Pepe Serna (American Me, Scarface, A Million to Juan) caroused with HBA and Lavender Bar representatives, including HBA President Elect José González and Lavender Bar President Andreas Meyer. The HBA representation included board members Carlos X. Colorado, Erica Diaz, and Kristen Lara Meyers and Wally Davis Scholar Joel Crespo. HBA President Genoveva M. Talbott told the HBA News that the HBA's support for the rally was strictly non-partisan and was rooted in the organization's belief that diversity and common ground required society to be tolerant and inclusive. "Of course, we also greatly admire the work that our esteemed honoree Dolores Huerta is doing and has done for many decades, and we also stand by our O.C. community partner, the Lavender Bar."

Wally Davis Scholarship Applications Are Available for Two $7,000 Scholarships!
Did you know that Latinos constitute more than 50% of California's population, yet less than 4% of California's attorneys are Latino? To bridge this gap, the HBA has the Wallace (Wally) R. Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Orange County Latino students who are presently attending law school and who have demonstrated involvement in the Latino Community. The Scholarship Fund was named in honor of Wallace (Wally) R. Davis, one of the first Hispanic attorneys in Orange County. He rose to the highest ranks in the legal profession, co-founding the HBA and championing the struggles of the Latino community. By assisting young Latino law students, this scholarship is awarded to those who would follow in his footsteps.
This year, the HBA is proud to announce that we will award $7,000 scholarships to two deserving law students. Students can apply online at http://www.ochba.org/Student_Resources/Wally_Davis_Scholarship.html, or download a PDF copy to mail. Detailed instructions are on our website. The deadline to submit applications is October 31, 2011.
Please help us share this information with as many students and schools as possible. Good luck!
