Meet Genoveva Meza Talbott A Note From The President

By: Genoveva Meza Talbott

Belated 4th of July greetings! Ordinarily, our Newsletter is sent out on the first week of each month, but July has just seemed to fly by. With all the BBQs, vacations and other summer events that are happening almost daily, it's hard to make time put pen to paper these days. So that being said, I'll try to make this brief...

The HBA capped off the month of June with an Angels game fundraiser hosted by Judicate West and a 1-hour CLE by Dean Chemerinsky at UCI School of Law. We proudly supported the PLC in their historical and record-breaking fundraising dinner. In early July, we had an excellent member-only Brown Bag Lunch, and the HBA Board had a productive annual Retreat at the Disneyland Resort Hotel. Details of what we've done recently and have planned for the rest of the summer are below and on our website, which has new content, including a page with " Past Dinner Honorees." Become an HBA member and have access to exclusive member-only information, events and special pricing.

Finally, law students; please apply for a 2011 Wally Davis Scholarship. We will be awarding two $7,000 scholarships this year. And to aspiring attorneys sitting for the Bar Exam later this month, we wish you success!

Enjoy your summer.

Wally Davis Scholarship Applications Are Available for Two $7,000 Scholarships!

Did you know that Latinos constitute more than 50% of California's population, yet less than 4% of California's attorneys are Latino? To bridge this gap, the HBA has the Wallace (Wally) R. Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Orange County Latino students who are presently attending law school and who have demonstrated involvement in the Latino Community. The Scholarship Fund was named in honor of Wallace (Wally) R. Davis, one of the first Hispanic attorneys in Orange County. He rose to the highest ranks in the legal profession, co-founding the HBA and championing the struggles of the Latino community. By assisting young Latino law students, this scholarship is awarded to those who would follow in his footsteps.

This year, the HBA is proud to announce that we will award $7,000 scholarships to two deserving law students. Students can apply online at http://www.ochba.org/Student_Resources/Wally_Davis_Scholarship.html, or download a PDF copy to mail. Detailed instructions are on our website. The deadline to submit applications is October 31, 2011.

Please help us share this information with as many students and schools as possible. Good luck!
Judicate West and Fisher & Phillips LLP co-sponsor Wally Davis Scholarship Fundraiser at Angels Stadium

Angels vs. Royals Game On June 10, 2011, Judicate West again demonstrated its outstanding commitment to the Orange County Hispanic Bar Association ("OCHBA") and the Wally Davis Scholarship Fund. With over 30 individuals in attendance, Judicate West entertained OCHBA members and guests in its exclusive Angels Stadium 3rd base line suite. In addition to great food, friends, and baseball, attendees were given an opportunity to meet and greet some of the top 50 neutrals in California, compliments of Judicate West. Proceeds from the event benefited the OCHBA Wally Davis Scholarship Fund.

Co-founder of Judicate West and Constitutional Rights Foundation O.C. ("CRF") board member Var Fox explains, "Judicate West proudly supports the OCHBA and its mission to promote education, unity and excellence. The Wally Davis Scholarship Fund benefits the legal community in Orange County and throughout California. In turn, organizations like the OCHBA and CRF enhance the talent pool from which future Judicate West neutrals can be selected and create opportunities for those who may not otherwise be afforded a chance at a successful legal career."

The OCHBA was also honored to have Fisher & Phillips LLP as an event co-sponsor. Current OCHBA Board of Director and Fisher & Phillips LLP Partner Rafael Nandel-Flores stated, "The OCHBA's commitment to assisting deserving law students and promoting diversity in the legal profession via the Wally Davis Scholarship Fund is just one of the many valuable services that the OCHBA provides to the legal community. I am grateful for both my law firm's and Judicate West's continuing support of the OCHBA and the Wally Davis Scholarship Fund."

HBA Hosts Dean Chemerinsky MCLE Presentation

The Hispanic Bar Association hosted a lecture by UCI School of Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky on Tuesday, June 21, 2011. The presentation, entitled a "United States Supreme Court Review," took place at the Law School's recently inaugurated Mark P. Robinson, Jr. Courtroom to an audience of attendees who received 1 hour of MCLE credit.

The event was attended by HBA President Genoveva Meza Talbott, who characterized the event as "a great success for the HBA, for which this event was the second MCLE credit presentation this year"-after the Belize travel seminar offered the previous month in Ambergris Caye, Belize. "Dean Chemerinsky is one of the preeminent constitutional scholars in the nation, and for us to offer his insights in an exclusive HBA program is really big for us," she added. Chemerinsky was the keynote speaker at the HBA's annual fundraising dinner in 2008, when the event represented the then new UCI Dean's first speaking event in Orange County.

The Supreme Court Review last month was well attended, and the HBA was represented by various delegates including and HBA Vice President Leo Paredes and board members Javier Rivera Carbone, Diana Lopez, Karin Khan, Aaron Flores, Rafael Nendel-Flores, Lyo Figueroa and Erica Diaz, who were given a tour of the UCI law campus by Dean Chemerinsky after the presentation. Earlier in the month, the ABA Council of the Section on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar granted the law school provisional accreditation.
