Genoveva Meza TalbottA Note from the President Elect
By Genoveva M. Talbott

In the spirit of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15), let's remember and pay tribute to the many Hispanics that have positively influenced and enhanced our nation.  Just this year, we witnessed Justice Sonia Sotomayor become the first Hispanic American to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States.  At this year's HBA Dinner we heard from Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis, the first Hispanic American woman to have served in the State Senate and now, in the U.S. Cabinet.  Of course, the list of influential Hispanic men and women is extensive and spans the spectrum of industries.

Hispanics in the legal industry play a vital role in shaping society. Whether sitting on the bench, arguing in a courtroom, teaching in law schools, working on legislation, or performing any other task for which legal training is valuable - we are affecting society. The HBA strives to do its part, starting by awarding scholarships to deserving minority law students. Our annual Installation & Scholarship Dinner is the HBA's largest fundraiser each year, dedicated exclusively toward this effort. Please "Save the Date" of March 5, 2011 for the 33rd Annual Installation & Scholarship Dinner at the Fairmont Newport Beach. Invitations and more detailed information about sponsorships, honourees, and special guests will be sent out soon.

In the interim, we hope you'll join us at our upcoming Autumn Bar Review/de Barranda on September 29, 2010, our Golf Clinic on October 9, 2010, or our annual Judges Barbeque on October 17, 2010. Please read below for more details.

HBA, OCAABA & LEX Host End-Of-Summer Mixer
October Golf Clinic
The Hispanic Bar Association of Orange County
("HBA") was joined by the O.C. Asian American Bar Association ("OCAABA") and Lex Romana at its traditional End-of-Summer mixer, held on Thursday, August 26 at the South Coast Winery in Santa Ana.  HBA President Carlos X. Colorado said the mixer, "like all HBA networking functions, was a mix of old friends as well as new faces, whom we hope we will see more of at future events."

The existing friends would include OCAABA President Ken Wang and Lex Romana President Janice Vinci, who hobnobbed with the attendees at the traditional summer mixer, which historically is hosted by the HBA and one or more of its sister bar associations. "The HBA also thanks its sponsors," said Colorado, "Lexis-Nexis, Esquire Solutions and the Calderon Settlements Group, for their gracious support for our mixer."

VIP guests included new O.C. Superior Court Judges Deborah J. Chuang and Scott Steiner, and their colleagues, Judges Sal Sarmiento, Franz Miller, and James Alfano (Ret.). Many other luminaries of the local legal community were in the distinguished gathering, including leaders of the bar associations.

The HBA contingent was headed up by President-Elect Genoveva Meza Talbott.  Also in attendance were former HBA President Lorena Peñaloza and former board member José Sandoval.  Current board members who attended were Karin Khan, the Program Committee Chair; Frank Acosta; Eva Casas Sarmiento; Erica Diaz; and Javier Rivera Carbone.
