President's Message
By
Carlos X. Colorado
Today, law students around the State will be sitting for the
beginning of the July 2010 California Bar Examination. We wish all of them luck, and we send especially heartfelt wishes to the friends of the HBA taking the Bar. This year, we have made many overtures to let law students know
that we welcome them to our profession and are eager to see them succeed. At our Holiday Party in December, Judge
Franz Miller led a swearing-in ceremony for HBA members Diana López and Aaron
Flores. This year, Membership
Chairman Marcelo Reyes has been visiting some of our OC law schools to let
future lawyers know the HBA is here - and that membership has its benefits. You may have read Edgar Agilasocho and Joni Carrasco's piece
here in HBA News, about what it's like to be in the inaugural class at UCI, or
you may have read about the law students who played in our softball team, the
hb-A's
(including Jimmy Cabral, Dave Rubalcava and Kristen Zierhut from Western State
Law School). Earlier this year,
Whittier Law Students got together and bought a table at our annual dinner. Bar associations like the HBA will signal to you that you're not
just starting a new job - you're entering a profession. ˇBienvenidos! -cXc

HBA Members Get Exclusive Preview Of State Bar Website Upgrades
The State Bar of California Member Services Center and the
Orange County Hispanic Bar Association ("HBA") announce that HBA members have
been invited to be among the first to use a new State Bar feature that allows
them to expand their State Bar profile.
The HBA was one of five local bar associations, state wide, selected for
this advance launch of the new feature coming later this fall to the State Bar
web site, when attorneys across the state will be able to use it. Information collected during the soft launch will be
viewable by the public, starting in September. It is hoped that the feedback to the State Bar from users in
the pilot program will be valuable as the Bar prepares to open up this feature
to the rest of the State Bar membership. In turn, HBA members will get a head start in filling out their
profiles, and have those profiles up for browsing before everyone else. Current HBA members will receive an
email this week with specific instructions on updating their profiles using a
secure link that will be provided.

HBA members attend PLC dinner in June | HBA Co-Sponsored "Pro Bono Clinic" A Success
The El Sol Pro Bono Clinic sponsored by the Hispanic Bar Association of Orange County & St. Thomas More Society of O.C. on July 14, in support of
the Public Law Center's community legal clinic at El Sol Science & Arts Academy in Santa Ana was a
great success. The event, the second partnering of the three organizations
so far this year was intended to provide meaningful legal consultations to the
intended beneficiaries. In that
regard, the event, at which 15 attorneys turned out to meet the 13 members of
the El Sol community who came for consultations on immigration, criminal and
consumer loan cases, was a complete success. Given the results of these PLC-HBA-STMS mash-ups, more like
events are expected. The volunteers included the presidents of the HBA and STMS -
Carlos Colorado and Greg
Weiler, respectively; as well as board
members of both organizations, including HBA president elect Genoveva
Meza-Talbott, board member Mayte
Santacruz Benavidez, and STMS board
leaders Judy Patno and Fabio
Cabezas (a former HBA president). This group was rounded out by regular
members of both organizations. The original HBA-STMS pro bono clinic to
benefit the PLC was held in March of this year, when the groups decided to
honor the 30th anniversary of the assassination of Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar
Romero with a "social justice" clinic. The fact that Romero was Hispanic and Catholic made him an easy frame of
reference for the two groups. The
success of the first event and the personal rapport among the HBA and STMS
members have assured further collaborations. The two groups first worked together to sponsor a welcome
reception for OC Auxiliary Bishop Cirilo Flores, who is both Hispanic and a former lawyer.

Hispanic Bar Association of Orange
County 2010-2011 Wally Davis
Scholarship Application Available!
Did you know that Latinos constitute almost 50% of California's population, yet less than 4% of California's attorneys are Latino? To bridge this gap, the HBA Annual Installation Dinner and Scholarship Fundraiser raises funds for the Wallace (Wally) R. Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Orange County Latino students who are presently attending law school and who have demonstrated involvement in the Latino Community. The Scholarship Fund was named in honor of Wallace (Wally) R. Davis, one of the first Hispanic attorneys in Orange County. He rose to the highest ranks in the legal profession, co-founding the HBA and championing the struggles of the Latino community. By assisting young Latino law students, this scholarship is awarded to those who would follow in his footsteps.

I n the Heights Musical Exclusive Discount By Karin Khan The Orange County Hispanic Bar
Association would like to thank the Orange County Performing Arts Center for
inviting some of its members to a VIP screening of the Tony Award winning
musical In the Heights in anticipation
of the musical's premiere here in Orange County from August 3 - 15, 2010. HBA Board Member Karin C. Khan who
attended the screening remarked:
"It's been a while
since I've seen any musicals and I was particularly intrigued when I heard
about In the Heights since a relative of
mine currently lives there. Much
to my delight, In the Heights did
not disappoint! In the
Heights is an engaging look into the
Washington Heights, NYC neighborhood in the forms of music, dance, English and
Spanish. The cast contains a
colorful set of characters who tell a story ranging from comedic humor to
action and drama. I think many of
us here in Orange County can relate in one way or another to the story of In
the Heights and I definitely recommend seeing
it."
In
the Heights is a musical about the
importance of home, family and finding where you belong. It tells the universal
story of a vibrant community in Manhattan's Washington Heights - a place where
the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always
open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It's a
community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where
the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and
which ones you leave behind. The
Orange County Performing Arts Center is offering a discount offer that includes
a special promotion code for a $20 discount on select seats for In the
Heights performances August 3 - 8,
excluding Saturday evening ( for more information on terms and
conditions). www.IntheHeightsthemusical.com
