A Note from
the President Elect
By
Genoveva M.
Talbott
Though
it seems like yesterday that we were bidding on silent
auction items to raise money for our scholarship fund at our March 6, 2010
Installation and Scholarship Dinner, the 2011 Dinner Committee, for which I am
the Chair, is already working on the details surrounding next year's
dinner. Indeed, we are
brainstorming on innovative ways to raise money for our scholarship fund,
highlight our deserving law school scholarship recipients, and, of course, make
the dinner a success.
In the coming months, we will fill you in
on important information about the 2011 dinner via our website, newsletters,
and our FaceBook and LinkedIn pages. In the meantime, you can watch a video to experience some of the historic
moments of this year's dinner by visiting our website. The 2010 dinner video is also available on YouTube. And if you haven't done so recently, take
a moment to visit our FaceBook and LinkedIn pages. Now, please continue reading below about
our upcoming El Sol Pro Bono Clinic, and other news of interest. Thanks for
your time!

New Bench Appointments Include New OC Superior Judge and HBA Endorsee
The HBA welcomes Theodore R. Howard to the Orange County
Superior Court and congratulates him in his appointment to the bench by Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger last week.
The HBA also welcomes and congratulates Yvette Verastegui, an Orange
County attorney who was appointed to the Los Angeles Superior Court. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed a new appellate justice
and 16 Superior Court judges, including Howard and Verastegui, 10 other judges
for LASC and one superior court judge for each of Merced, Lake, Santa Barbara
and San Diego counties. According
to a DAILY JOURNAL tally, the new judges will include three deputies from the
Los Angeles alternate public defender's office. Five of the new appointees are prosecutors and four come
from criminal defense practices. Two are bench officers and the remaining six are civil lawyers. Seven
are Republicans, eight are Democrats and two declined to state an affiliation. The HBA had just endorsed Verastegui at the end of May. Responding to the HBA endorsement,
Sharon Majors-Lewis, the Governor's Judicial Appointments Secretary, wrote HBA
President Carlos X. Colorado, "I concurred with your assessment that she would
be an excellent choice for Superior Court Judge. More importantly, so did the Governor." Verastegui was a deputy public defender
in Los Angeles in 1994 and in Orange County from 1994 to 2001. The HBA salutes all of the new judges, especially Mr. Howard
and Ms. Verastegui.

I n the Heights Musical Exclusive Discount By Karin Khan The Orange County Hispanic Bar
Association would like to thank the Orange County Performing Arts Center for
inviting some of its members to a VIP screening of the Tony Award winning
musical In the Heights in anticipation
of the musical's premiere here in Orange County from August 3 - 15, 2010. HBA Board Member Karin C. Khan who
attended the screening remarked:
"It's been a while
since I've seen any musicals and I was particularly intrigued when I heard
about In the Heights since a relative of
mine currently lives there. Much
to my delight, In the Heights did
not disappoint! In the
Heights is an engaging look into the
Washington Heights, NYC neighborhood in the forms of music, dance, English and
Spanish. The cast contains a
colorful set of characters who tell a story ranging from comedic humor to
action and drama. I think many of
us here in Orange County can relate in one way or another to the story of In
the Heights and I definitely recommend seeing
it."
In
the Heights is a musical about the
importance of home, family and finding where you belong. It tells the universal
story of a vibrant community in Manhattan's Washington Heights - a place where
the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always
open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It's a
community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where
the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and
which ones you leave behind. The
Orange County Performing Arts Center is offering a discount offer that includes
a special promotion code for a $20 discount on select seats for In the
Heights performances August 3 - 8,
excluding Saturday evening ( for more information on terms and
conditions). www.IntheHeightsthemusical.com

Hispanic Bar Association of Orange
County 2010-2011 Wally Davis
Scholarship Application Available!
Did you know that Latinos constitute almost 50% of California's population, yet less than 4% of California's attorneys are Latino? To bridge this gap, the HBA Annual Installation Dinner and Scholarship Fundraiser raises funds for the Wallace (Wally) R. Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Orange County Latino students who are presently attending law school and who have demonstrated involvement in the Latino Community. The Scholarship Fund was named in honor of Wallace (Wally) R. Davis, one of the first Hispanic attorneys in Orange County. He rose to the highest ranks in the legal profession, co-founding the HBA and championing the struggles of the Latino community. By assisting young Latino law students, this scholarship is awarded to those who would follow in his footsteps.
