President's Message
By Carlos X. Colorado
On behalf of the Hispanic Bar Association of Orange County,
congrats to the new O.C. Superior Court judges elevated as the result of the
June 8 election: Scott Steiner, Nick Dourbetas, Andy Manssourian, Cheri Pham, and Lon Hurwitz. It is the HBA's hope that we can work
collaboratively to make the Orange County Superior Courts responsive and
representative of all attorneys and legal services stakeholders in Orange
County. The HBA expresses its commitment to a diverse judiciary through
the work of its judiciary evaluations committee, which considers and recommends
judicial endorsements to the HBA board. Seeking the HBA's endorsement has become de rigueur for aspirants to
judicial office, which serves the HBA's pursuit of a judiciary that serves its
constituents and all other sectors of the community. Two of our newly minted judges, Messrs. Steiner and Hurwitz,
were the recipients of an HBA endorsement this year. In highlighting the important mission of the
judicial evaluations committee, I salute its chairman, Eric Alderete, for all his hard work.

HBA Sponsors PLC Dinner,
July Clinic For Social Justice
The HBA bylaws specify that a central purpose of the
organization is "the promotion of excellence in providing legal services with a
social conscience." Bylaws, §
3.2. "Therefore, you can say that
the HBA has social justice in its DNA," said HBA Pres. Carlos X. Colorado. The HBA expresses that commitment through its support of the Public Law Center (PLC), both as a sponsor of its recent dinner, and of an upcoming PLC legal clinic. The HBA bought a table at PLC's dinner for 6 years in a row
-- every year from 2003 to 2008. This year, the HBA was a bronze sponsor of the
PLC dinner, which was held earlier this week. Several HBA presidents were in attendance at the dinner,
including the recent leaders Lisa Ramirez, Norma García Guillén, Monica
Lukoschek, and current President Colorado and President-Elect Genoveva Meza Talbott. In March of this year, the HBA teamed up with the St. Thomas
More Society, a Catholic lawyers' group, to staff one of the community legal
clinics of the PLC. Members and
volunteers from both groups offered legal and intake services at the El Sol
Science and Arts Academy in Santa Ana. The result was hailed as one of the most successful community clinics
ever offered by the PLC. The
volunteers included Hon. Salvador Sarmiento, former HBA president Fabio
Cabezas, current HBA board members Colorado and Kristen Lara, four STMS board
members, and four Western State Law Students. The event was so successful that all involved vowed to do it
again, and the result is the second El Sol Pro Bono Clinic, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14, 2010. We
invite all our members to participate. "Participation is easy and hassle-free," said Colorado, who plans to
return to El Sol II. Volunteers
are asked to RSVP to info@ochba.org and then just show up. "You don't need any particular
expertise or experience," Colorado said. "We will tell you everything you need to know when you come in. It's a terrific and very rewarding
experience." The El Sol Academy is located on 1010 North Broadway, Santa
Ana, CA 92701. More information, including a map, is located on the HBA web site.

Hispanic Bar Association of Orange
County 2010-2011 Wally Davis
Scholarship Application Available!
Did you know that Latinos constitute almost 50% of California's population, yet less than 4% of California's attorneys are Latino? To bridge this gap, the HBA Annual Installation Dinner and Scholarship Fundraiser raises funds for the Wallace (Wally) R. Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Orange County Latino students who are presently attending law school and who have demonstrated involvement in the Latino Community. The Scholarship Fund was named in honor of Wallace (Wally) R. Davis, one of the first Hispanic attorneys in Orange County. He rose to the highest ranks in the legal profession, co-founding the HBA and championing the struggles of the Latino community. By assisting young Latino law students, this scholarship is awarded to those who would follow in his footsteps.
