The California La Raza Lawyers, the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law ("Lawyers' Committee"), the Hispanic National Bar Association, and our coalition partners seek volunteer attorneys, paralegals and law students for Election Protection - the nation's largest non-partisan voter protection program - on November 4, 2008.
The turn out of Latino voters is expected to reach historic highs and there are concerns that the Hispanic community could be the target of voter suppression tactics. Members of the California La Raza Lawyers are needed to ensure that the large number of newly registered and other eligible Latino voters are able to freely exercise their right to vote. There is a significant need for lawyers and law students with cultural competence and Spanish language skills to protect the voting rights of the Hispanic community.
Election Protection is a national coalition that works throughout the year to break down barriers to the ballot box for traditionally disenfranchised voters. Other partners include the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO), the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), and the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Educational Fund (PRLDEF).
To that end, Election Protection is seeking legal volunteers to staff the 1-866-OUR-VOTE and 1-888-VE-Y-VOTA hotlines and provide live assistance to voters who have questions or need to report problems with voting.
In addition, volunteer attorneys, paralegals and law students are needed to serve as Mobile Legal Volunteers ("MLVs"). MLVs work in teams of two and monitor a zone of 4-10 polling places, respond to incidents reported through the hotline, and assist voters at the polling place. Potential problems include dissemination of misinformation by poll workers, problems associated with voting machines (including new electronic ones), and potential intimidation of voters.
While the voter hotline is available to all voters across the country, Election Protection targets communities traditionally disenfranchised, including African Americans, Asian Pacific Americans, Latinos, Native Americans and other racially and ethnically diverse communities, seniors, young people, low-income voters and individuals with disabilities.
Volunteers must attend in-person a 1 ½ hour training session and are asked to sign up for a 4-5 hour shift. Materials will be provided. The hotline is a non-partisan effort and is not affiliated in any way with any candidate or political party. To volunteer, please sign-up directly at http://www.ncffe.org/Volunteer. Volunteers will receive an e-mail in late September or early October with a link to sign up for specific trainings and shifts.

On the evening of November 6, 2008 LASOC will host its 50th Anniversary Celebration at The Grove in Anaheim.
