Deputy Public Defender and HBA Member, Joe Perez, has been selected to join the Orange County Superior Court as a Commissioner. Joe served as a Deputy Public Defender in Orange County for twelve years, and is the son of Judge James O. Wally Davis Scholarship Applications
Now Available!
This scholarship fund is sponsored by the Hispanic Bar Association and awards scholarships to Orange County Hispanic law students. The Fund was named in memory of Wally Davis, one of the first Hispanic attorneys in Orange County who fought for the civil rights of all Hispanics. Eligible students must be of Latino origin, have Latino community and school involvement. In addition, students entering in their first year of law school must posses a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0. Priority will be given to students with significant ties to Orange County.
The HBA is offering the following scholarships:
- Three General Law School Tuition Scholarships in the amount of $3,750 each
- One BAR BRI Scholarship in the amount of $2,000
- One 2008 Summer Externship Scholarship in the amount of $1,750 at a legally related,
OC based public interest non-profit organization (i.e. Public Law Center, Legal Aid, ACLU, etc.)

Santa Ana Citizenship Fair Needs Volunteers Volunteers are needed to help out at the Citizenship Fair on Saturday, July 21, 2007. California Bar Foundation Seeks Applicants for its Board The California Bar Foundation is seeking applications for several positions on its board of directors for terms beginning Jan. 1. The deadline to apply is August 17, 2007. Applicants may be attorneys, judges or members of the public who have a demonstrated interest in and commitment to the foundation's charitable mission; who have previous board, public or community service; or who are knowledgeable about charitable fundraising. Board members serve two-year terms and are expected to attend approximately five board meetings per year in San Francisco or Los Angeles and participate on at least two committees, whose meetings usually are conducted by conference call. Anaheim Hosts State Bar Meeting
Jane Goodall, Eleanor Clift and author James Bradley will headline the State Bar Annual Meeting scheduled for Sept. 27-30 in Anaheim. A new State Bar president and five new members of the board of governors will be sworn in at the convention, which offers a low-cost opportunity for California attorneys to earn up to 20 MCLE credits in one weekend. Members of Group 3, whose last names start with N-Z, must complete 25 hours of MCLE by Feb. 1.
The Bench Bar Biannual Conference will be held at the same time, bringing together judicial leaders from throughout the state to share their insights on issues affecting the justice system. Chief Justice Ronald M. George will deliver his State of the Judiciary address as well.A full preview of meeting events is available at the State Bar website at www.calbar.org. Attendees may register and make hotel reservations online at that site. The deadline for early bird registration is Aug. 27.

HBA 29th Annual Installation Dinner & Scholarship Fundraiser Dinner Video Available!
Did you miss the HBA's 29th Annual Installation Dinner & Scholarship Fundraiser where we recognized the trailblazers of Orange County's Latino community? Well, here's your chance to catch a portion of the evening. For a small donation you can now receive your very own copy of a DVD profiling one of the awardees of the evening or the Orange County Latino Trailblazers.
In the spirit of the evening's theme - Rompiendo Barreras, Formando Caminos/Breaking Barriers, Blazing Paths - the HBA honored the Honorable Judge Frances Muñoz, the first Latina to be appointed to the bench in California, and Joseph L. Chairez, the first Latino to serve as President of the Orange County Bar Association in its over 100 year history.
In addition, there was a special video tribute to other Orange County Latino trailblazers, including: Alex Maldonado, one of the founders of the first LULAC in Orange County; lola Gallardo, the first Latina police "matron" in Orange County; Joe O'Campo, the first Latino appointed as State Appraiser in Orange County; and Hon. Loretta Sanchez, the first Latina elected to U.S. Congress in Orange County.
