Greetings Spirit of Horse Friends ~
I have some new creations and directions to share. It always amazes me how we create our own reality. I began thinking I wanted to expand my horizons and paint other imagery in addition to horses, and just a few weeks later I received a commission to create a work of art for a book cover. The subject didn't remotely resemble a horse but did require my special brand of magic. Shortly thereafter I was offered the opportunity to revisit my love for sculpting in creating a new horse figurine for the Trail of Painted Ponies! Other horizons expanded as well; I received commissions from all over the world! An Illustration of a Unicorn for a Wine label in South Africa, an Illustration of a Horse Chariot driven by Dionysus for a Cognac label in Singapore, and a collection of my prints was purchased to decorate a hotel in Turkey! In addition, this year author Ulrike Dietmann featured my art on the cover of her book, as well as translating the Way of the Horse into German.
We all speak the same language... Horse!
Enjoy and let me know how you like my new creations! Kim

"We feel the wind as a living thing
Moving through us like mercury.
Companions, we stand side by side
Sharing a glimpse of infinity."
~ Kim McElroy
Original Kim McElroy's are difficult to come by. With my busy commissioned art schedule it is rare when I allow myself the time to create one of my own inspirations. This painting came to me in a vision and depicts the feeling of an evening I spent among some wild mares at Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary. It reminds me of the warm autumn wind in their manes, and the peace they embodied.

"With the steam of my breath following in my wake
I climb into the unknown with my eyes wide open
The night carries me as if it knows my name
In my quest to find myself
I discover to my surprise
There are others like me
Going in the same direction"
~ Kim McElroy
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's ..... a butterfly train? Author Linda Colucci approached me about creating the cover of her book "The 440 Train". My task was to depict the train in a realistic yet mystical way with butterfly wings and the images of 4 women riding the train and visible through the train windows... read more>>

"Betwixt and Between
I am Fire and Ice Behold my magnetic gaze
Horse dragon
I am Elemental force
I know the intrigue
Of your vibrant heart"
~ Kim McElroy
I created this piece during an art workshop I was teaching to a group of young girls. While they worked on their art projects, I busied my hands and thoughts with creating something from nothing, with no pre-conceived idea. It is strange that sometimes it is when I am "not doing" something, how the most unique works of art can take shape.

Art from the Archives
"In all of your seeking
you have already found.
The Universe is speaking
Echoes of truth resound.
I will carry you there as far as you will allow, so remember the journey for others to follow."
~ Kim McElroy
This painting was created for a woman and her special mare. As I created the pastel drawing I asked for guidance in an intuitive dialogue with the painting and the horse

I embody power with grace
Every fiber of my being sings with creation
My faith comes from within.
It is as much a part of me as breathing
The love of life sustains me when I am weary
I bathe in the light of trust

~ A Gift from the Sea ~
A Kim McElroy original sculpture
by Trail of Painted Ponies
The Trail of Painted Ponies collectibles were expanding their pony designs into new and unique sculptural expressions. They asked me to dream up a pony inspired by my own special brand of equine magic. So I came up with a creation inspired by Poseidon's creation of the horse as "A Gift from the Sea". This beautiful rearing horse is accompanied by two horses made of sea foam.
For a limited time, to make "A Gift from the Sea" even more special, I'm offering Signed Hand-Embellished Ponies. I have created a magical beach scene by adding sand, seashells, and sparkling quartz rocks to the front of the base. Two distinctive hoof prints are visible in the sand, soon to be peacefully washed away by the salty sea.

Two New German Books feature Kim's Art
Das Medizinpferd by Ulrike Dietmann features cover art "One with the Wind"
English Version coming soon!
Ulricke's Comments:
"When I saw the picture "One with the Wind" on the website of the American horse painter Kim McElroy I knew I had found the cover. I asked for permission to use the art. Yet, Kim McElroy informed me that the owner of the horse that is portrayed on the painting had asked Kim to withhold commercial use of the portrait. The portrait had been created as a memorial for Alicia of her beloved horse Casanova and the pain of his loss was still too strong. Kim McElroy generously offered me different alternatives, but I was sure, it had to be this cover. I sent an e-mail which Kim forwarded to Alicia, talking about the story of the book that it is about a woman who loses her daughter, about grief and how horses can help us to overcome it. Alicia answered: "Upon reading your letter I have decided to allow you to use Cas for your cover. I have to tell you that when I heard about the content of the book, it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I lost my fiance, the love of my life, through a motorcycle accident and - to say it lightly, I was completely broken. I purchased Cas shortly after Jeff's passing and that horse was all I had - he kept me going and held me together. He was the only reason why I got out of bed each morning for that first year. I always told him he was the best medicine, so how fitting that the title is "The Medicine Horse." The more I learn about this book the more fitting it is to me that Cas will be on the cover." I want to thank Alicia and Kim from the depth of my heart for letting me use this beautiful painting." ~ Ulrike Dietman

Personal News
 | | Kim with Mystico and Raven |
As I reflect on this last year I am put in mind of one of my favorite quotes...
Each day is a little life: every waking and rising a little birth,
every fresh morning a little youth,
every going to rest and sleep a little death.
It has been a challenging year. In December our llama Mara stopped eating. The vets were perplexed when they couldn't find a cause, but thankfully after two weeks and two hospital visits, she recovered. Then in March, our mare Meadow made it clear to us that she was ready to go. Just a few weeks later, our miniature gelding Laddie came down with a sudden fever and colic. Thankfully after a visit to the hospital he recovered.

Since my near death experience the end of May, I find myself surprisingly focused on each day. I have had to be patient with my healing process. As my heart and body are healing from crisis and surgery, so then have other issues come forward to be revealed and healed. It is easy for me to become frustrated, but I am trying to learn patience. I have been working to find a balance between intuitive healers and doctors. Sometimes healing seems like a lot of work, and sometimes it seems like I will never get back to "normal". But I at a deep level I trust that I am moving towards a form of balance with my mind, body, and spirit.
In the meantime, our horses have continued to have some of their own challenges. When I get grumpy about my recovery, all I have to do is look at how they deal with their health issues, which are often more daunting than mine, and realize they face each day with no expectations that it be any other way than it is, and they find pleasure in whatever form they can find it in; good food, sunshine, shade, love, and companionship.

I have had a few glimpses of inspiration. A few weeks ago I had a vision for the portrait of the horse I was to paint next. This inspired me to begin working in the studio again. My first application of pastel to paper after several months away was a lovely reminder of how familiar I am with the amazing process of inspiration unfolding. I would like to embody that feeling I have when I create my art to healing myself; to remember to hold the grace of living in that state of being in the unknown, and trusting that all will unfold for the highest and best.
I also received an inspiration from my horse Mystico to remember a painting I had a vision for ten years ago. As Mystico was eating his hay and so dextrous was his nose and lips moving his hay bin, that he reminded me of an elephant, and I remembered an inspiration I had of painting elephants embracing with their trunks, and horses grooming, between both species holding the planet earth in balance, it is called "Deeper than Words". I have the references to do this painting, and years ago I was fortunate to photograph Mystico and his greatest horse teacher, our appaloosa gelding Patches who is now in spirit, grooming each other. I am dedicated to finding the time to create my own art in addition to my wonderfully busy commissioned schedule.
Time flies by, and I am watching myself unfold, and I am so grateful to have all of you out there to share my insights with.
Until next time...
May the Horse be with you ~

Meadow
July 13, 1983 ~ March 21, 2012
Our beautiful anglo-arab mare Meadow was born in the Ozarks and traveled here with her owners to Washington in an open horse trailer at the age of four months old. She lived at a small horse farm I was drawn to, which a year later brought us to find our farm a block away. She adopted us a few years later when she lost her horse partner when she was 22, and we walked her down the road to meet her new family. She lived a very happy life here with our herd. We were blessed by her mystery and joy in the far reaches of our pastures, her courage in the face of adversity, and her love of life.
