Plus CHARAC Reception & Art Auction
This Sunday at the Rookery
It's Two-Fer Sunday this weekend at the Rookery! Great music. PLUS great art.
One of our most popular musical performers, Washburn singer/songwriter Yazmín, is back on the Rookery's outdoor stage for the third time this season.
Two summers ago Yazmín won first place at the Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua "Songwriter of the Year Competition." And last summer she opened at the Big Top for Nanci Griffith. When Griffith took the mic after hearing Yazmín perform from backstage, she exclaimed:
"How brilliant is she? I was just transported to another place. What a voice, what a keyboard player, just absolutely extraordinary."
High praise indeed, coming from the queen of "folkabilly." And once again this weekend Yazmín will be joined by well known Big Top veteran guitar and fiddle player Bruce Bowers in their duo, Beat Zero. You won't want to miss it!
And if that's not enough entertainment for one afternoon the Rookery concurrently will be hosting the closing reception for the Cable Hayward Area Arts Council's Gallery on Main Street, the exhibition of colorful banners hanging from utility poles throughout Cable all summer. Works by 24 artists -- photographs, paintings, and drawings -- were chosen to be replicated in the 12' x 24' vinyl banners, each one sponsored by a local business.
Both the banners, and the original artwork from which they were created, will be available for your viewing pleasure this Sunday. Many of the artists are expected to be in attendance as well.
Better yet, you'll have the opportunity to take some home with you! The art that is, not the artists. ;) Both banners and original art will be sold to the highest bidders in a live online auction...with a computer link and wireless Internet connection available right there on the Rookery patio. So bring along your smart phone or laptop and get in on the action.
Our patio grill fires up at 1:30, and the music will run from shortly after 2 PM until the online bidding ends at 6 PM. Be sure to arrive early, because seating is limited and on a first come-first served basis. We're anticipating a big turnout, so if you simply CAN'T get here early be sure to pack a few lawn chairs unless you prefer to stand.
The Rookery's Summer Sunday Serenades are scheduled EVERY Sunday afternoon (plus Labor day) through the end of September...17 live outdoor concerts in all. All performances are free, though gratuities for the musicians are most appreciated. For the most up to date schedule of all performances check out our online music calendar.
Yazmín, with special guest Bruce Bowers. Plus the Gallery on Main Street closing reception and art auction. This Sunday. Live. Outdoors. Only at the Rookery!
