Life is Sweet-Drink it Up!
Just make sure it doesn't contain High-Fructose Corn Sweetener |
|
To "Eat, Drink and be Merry" is expected during the holidays. I always say that if you eat healthy foods most of the time you can indulge in the not so healthy occasionally without harming your health or feeling guilty. However, the word "occasionally" needs to be clarified and certain sweeteners should be avoided completely. Here's what you need to know.
The average American now consumes a whopping 42 pounds of High Fructose Corn Sweetener (HFCS) annually, which adds an extra 76,000 calories per year to the average American diet. Its name implies that HFCS is the just fructose, the natural healthy sugar found in fruits. However, the truth is, this inexpensive and plentiful sugar made from corn syrup is sucrose, the unhealthy sugar also found in cane syrup and common table sugar. HFCS is a man-made recombination of the glucose and fructose extracted from the sucrose found in corn syrup.
Recent research that studied 50,000 U.S. nurses found that those who drank just one serving of HFCS sweetened soda per day had a significant elevation in their blood sugar, gained weight more quickly, had a higher incidence of fatty liver disease and an 80% higher risk of developing diabetes than those who drank less than one soda per month. Surprisingly, all it took was one soft drink per day to put on the extra pounds and boost the risk of diabetes and developing a fatty liver.

Dr. Hansen recommends avoiding HFCS completely; use natural fructose, honey or pure maple syrup in moderate amounts instead. He also recommends that you get your blood sugar checked annually for diabetes. If you do have high blood sugar you can take Glucoright to lower your levels as part of a healthy diet and exercise program.

| DRUG ALERT! Avandia Heart Attack Risk |
Drug Alert! Avandia (rosiglitazone) is a prescription drug from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) approved by the FDA in 1999 to treat Type 2 diabetes. While Avandia might have helped diabetic patients in some regards, it seems that this benefit comes with a 38% increased risk of developing serious heart-related side effects including heart attacks and strokes.
The FDA has been pushing for a new Black Box WARNING about the increased heart attack associated with Avandia, according to an October 24, 2007 article in The Wall Street Journal, "Tougher Avandia Warning Is Urged."
When Avandia gets its new "black box" warning about increased heart attack risks, Avandia sales may be even further diminished going forward. GlaxoSmithKline could follow the lead of other pharmaceutical giants and simply pull the product from the market for "business" reasons. This new Big Pharma practice of withdrawing an alleged unsafe prescription drug for said-to-be business reasons (rather than safety reasons) could be called a "soft" recall.
Dr. Hansen recommends simply going natural. Diet, exercise and Dr. Hanen's Blood Sugar balancing formula known as GlucoRight may be all that you need. If you or someone you know takes diabetic medication please tell them about this Drug Alert!
