AYPO Welcomes New Staff Member

Alison Lowell joins the AYPO team as Assistant General Manager, a new job position created in September. Her responsibilities include assisting the General Manager with the four orchestras, rehearsals, auditions, and customer relations at concerts.

Alison is a devoted advocate of the arts. As principal oboist of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in South Africa, Alison premiered new works at the National Arts Festival, Classic FM Johannesburg, the Unyazi Electronic Music Festival and performed the Strauss Oboe Concerto as a featured soloist. In 2009, Alison was the recipient of the prestigious "Investing in Artists Grant" from the Center for Cultural Innovation for an extended-range oboe. She launched  the "Loboe Project" as a series of commissions and performances of works written specifically for her oboe. Alison spent two seasons at the Lucerne Music Festival under the direction of Pierre Boulez; she was part of the Ensemble Modern Festival Orchestra (Austria) and the North American premiere of Wolfgang Rihm's opera "Proserpina" at the Spoleto Festival USA. As managing director/oboist of the new music ensemble Out of Context, she organized four national tours and received a grant from the "Meet the Composer" Foundation. She has worked for the Center for Religion and Civic Culture in Los Angeles and as an intern at the Chicago Cultural Center. She has coordinated many education and outreach projects both in the US and South Africa and received degrees from the Eastman School of Music and the University of Southern California.
