AYPO Winds and Brass Master Classes
Sunday, Sept. 9, 2:00-3:45 p.m., Langley HS [before Season Orientation]
Dear AYPO Winds and Brass Musicians,
I am extremely pleased to begin the season with exciting master classes! We have engaged seven top winds and brass performers from our region to work with you from 2:00-3:45 p.m. (before season orientation meeting) on Sunday, September 9 at Langley High School. ALL WINDS AND BRASS MUSICIANS FROM ALL ORCHESTRAS are expected to attend. You will need to bring your instrument and be prepared to play an orchestral excerpt or etude. These master class teachers were chosen not just for their performing expertise but because of their devotion and enthusiasm for working with young musicians. There is no doubt that these master classes will provide an invaluable learning experience for you as we begin our weekly rehearsals. The master class teachers are:

This will also be a fun opportunity for you to meet musicians on the same instrument as you who play in the other orchestras. Special thanks to Mr. Tom Cupples, Assistant to the Music Director, for his work in making this extraordinary opportunity a reality. See you on September 9th!

AYP to Tour in Italy Next Summer! AYPO is invited to be the Orchestra-In-Residence at the InterHarmony International Music Festival in the Tuscany region of Italy during the summer of 2013. The orchestra in residence will be comprised of musicians from the 2012-2013 American Youth Philharmonic as well as musicians from the 2012-2013 American Youth Symphonic Orchestra, subject to approval by the Music Director. As part of the festival, AYPO will perform four or five concerts in the Tuscany region over a 10 day period, while our musicians will have the opportunity to live and work with musicians from all over the world. We believe this is an excellent educational opportunity and we would like to use this music festival model of touring in the future. We believe that this trip helps to fulfill our mission of providing the highest quality musical experience that allows our students to grow as musicians and individuals. Stay tuned for details!

Season Orientation
SUNDAY, SEPT. 9, 4:00 P.M., LANGLEY HS
All musicians are required to attend along with a parent/guardian. There will be an introduction session with the administrative staff and conductors followed by a Q&A session. Musicians should pick up concert tickets and the member handbook before orientation (3:30-4:00 p.m.) or immediately after orientation. See above for details about master classes for winds musicians at 2:00 p.m.

This is an exciting new addition to AYPO's educational opportunities and is open to all musicians (including piano) in AYP and AYSO. Music Buddies Mentor Program APPLY BY SEPT. 15 [Download Application]
Music Buddies is a peer-to-peer musical training opportunity providing private music instruction to disadvantaged students in the region. AYPO musicians have the opportunity to mentor these students on their instruments on a weekly basis. Mentors attend monthly training sessions with a professional educator in order to learn how to teach music to children. The program is open to musicians in AYCO, AYSO, and AYP (8th grade or older). Mentoring is a way for young musicians to gain valuable hands-on teaching experience while enriching the lives of fellow musicians.

Merchandise, Grocery Cards
MERCHANDISEAYPO has a wide assortment of merchandise that includes t-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, music bags, coffee mugs, stickers, and pencils. Merchandise will be on sale at every concert... be sure to buy your AYPO gear early before it's sold out! GROCERY CARDS
Grocery cards are issued to AYPO and are used like cash to purchase groceries (i.e. $100 card buys $100 worth of groceries). AYPO earns 5% of the card amount purchased. Simply download the order form or purchase at any concert. For Safeway, simply register your card online and AYPO will receive 3% back for every purchase. AYPO Growth Results in Need for Restructuring
The American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras (AYPO), one of the nation's premier youth orchestras, has served students up to age 21 in the D.C. metropolitan region since 1964. With four orchestras, three ensembles, and more than 420 musicians, the organization has grown over the past four years, building a first-class artistic and coaching staff under the direction of Music Director Daniel Spalding. "The growth of AYPO has resulted in a need to re-examine the type of organizational support required, particularly the need for local and national corporate sponsorships," said James Walters, Vice President of the AYPO Board of Directors and Chair of the Development Committee. In order to accomplish the strategic goals of AYPO, a new organizational structure will be developed over the next few months. In order to facilitate achieving the AYPO mission, Executive Director Jack Walton has agreed to step down from his current position. "Jack has a genuine enthusiasm to promote the musical talents of our wonderful young musicians and has been a positive energy source from which we all benefited," said Spalding. Until the organizational roles are re-defined, Ms. Margaret Adams, President of the AYPO Board of Directors, will assume the responsibilities of the Executive Director during the interim period. "I believe I speak for everyone in the organization when I say that we would like to thank Jack for his dedication to AYPO," said Spalding. "As this re-organization progresses, you can be sure that our programs will continue to operate in the same efficient and skillful manner that so impressed me when I joined the organization a few years ago. I am eagerly looking forward to a very bright future for AYPO." |

Hiring Student Stage Crew
Brief Description [application]: Stage crew members can be musicians from AYP, AYSO, and AYCO. The stage crew handles the physical preparation at rehearsals and concert sites for all four orchestras and works under the supervision of the Operations Manager and Assistant Operations Manager.
Pay: $7.25 per hour for their work or may choose to be awarded community service hours.
Availability: Arrive at locations one hour prior to regular rehearsals and two hours prior to dress rehearsals and concerts.
