AYP Concertmistress Takes the Stage
 
The American Youth Philharmonic (AYP), led by Maestro Luis Haza, will perform Virtuosity this Sunday, April 19, 1:00pm at George Mason University Center for the Arts in Fairfax, Virginia. The concert features student soloist Marina Aikawa, performing Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major. Repertoire Marina Aikawaalso includes Verdi's Overture to Nabucco, Tchaikovsky's "Pas de deux" from Nutcracker Suite No. 2, and Elgar's Enigma Variations.
 
Spotlight on the Soloist: Marina Aikawa is in her third year serving as Concertmistress of the American Youth Philharmonic. She began playing the violin at the age of four while living in Japan and moved to the United States with her family at age 12. At age 14, she was the youngest finalist in the National Symphony Orchestra Young Soloists' Competition, performing Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto at the John F. Kennedy Center Concert Hall in Washington, DC. (Click here to read the full biography.)

Child / Student: $10 (children 5 and younger are free)
General admission seating. Tickets available at the door approximately 30 minutes prior to the concert.
 
Join us in the lobby before the concert for an AYPO chamber ensemble performance by Quintet Con Fuoco. Come out at intermission for a performance by the AYPO Percussion Ensemble.
 

Drummin' Up Some Composition

 
composition contest imageGrab a pencil and put it to paper! Doug Wallace Percussion is hosting its second annual composition contest for original works for percussion. Professional percussionists, composers, and students are encouraged to submit their compositions to be judged by a panel of professional musicians. Prize money and a publication contract will be awarded to the winner from two categories. Application deadline is May 30, 2009, and winners will be announced on June 26, 2009.
