Adkins of NSO Joins Philharmonic

Elisabeth Adkins, Associate Concertmaster with the National Symphony Orchestra, will grace the stage with our very own Philharmonic, featuring Saint-Saëns' Violin Concerto No. 3. TheElisabeth Adkins performance is this Sunday, April 13, 1:00pm at George Mason University's Center for the Arts in Fairfax.

Like many of the Philharmonic members who began playing music at a young age, Adkins learned to play the violin at age four. She also grew up in a musical world, being the daughter of noted musicologists and sister to four violinists, two cellists, and a soprano. Adkins was performing professionally as a teenager, both modern repertoire and early music on period instruments. As a family, the Adkins String Ensemble made its debut in 1994 at the Dallas Symphony's Meyerson Hall and the family chamber group presents a concert series in Dallas. The ensemble has been in residency in Colorado at Music in the Mountains. The von Trappe family from The Sound of Music may have found their competition with the Adkins family!

In addition to being involved in the community as a soloist and orchestra member, Adkins is Concertmaster with the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra in Alexandria and a founding member of the American Chamber Players. In the academic world, Adkins is on the faculty of the University of Maryland and the Levine School of Music, and her position as a faculty member of the National Orchestral Institute allows her to work with young people interested in pursuing orchestral careers.
