Jazzin' Up the Philharmonic

Join us this Sunday at 1:00pm for a jazzy performance by pianist Burnett Thompson alongside Luis Haza and the American Youth Philharmonic. Discover the richness of America's cultural heritage by exploring three diverse contemporary works. Gershwin's fusion of blues and classical music, Bernstein's fierce mambo rhythms and "Cool" jazz beats, and Schuman's seeping portrayal of early America contribute to an afternoon that pays homage to America's musical melting pot!Burnett Thompson, piano

AYPO Maestros in the Spotlight

In the February 2008 issue of Fairfax County's prestigous  Magazine, the conductors of AYPO take the spotlight! Readers catch a glimpse of their history, goals, and what inspires them as music educators. AYPO is very proud of our artistic staff and their positive influence in the community, and on our young musicians.

 

Around the Town

"Sound Walk" by Jane Franklin Dance with a performance by the Nova String Quartet of AYPO: Saturday, March 1, Jane Franklin Dance8:00pm at the NVCC Schlesinger Concert Hall, Alexandria, Virginia. Jane Franklin Dance brings together premier dance, live music, and artistic and community collaboration; from duet marimbas, to a string quartet, to an original music composition that incorporates the sounds of neighborhood workshops, to a chorus of youth voices, each dance utilizes the power of collaboration to combine artistic comment about the ever changing community with the people who inhabit it.

 
 

"American Minimalist Forefathers": Sunday, March 9, 3:00pm at the Music Center at Strathmore, Bethesda, Maryland. To celebrate the music of contemporary American composers, pianist Laurie Hudicek and percussionist Leon Khoja-Eynatyan will perform Steve Reich's Piano Phase (for piano and marimba) and Terry Riley's monumental work In C. Tickets are $25 adults, $20 seniors.
