Spotlight on AYPO Musicians

The spotlight shines on Erin Phelps, 16, violin co- concertmaster of AYP. Erin is from Maryland and has been playing the violin for 10 years. Read on to learn more about this amazing musician!

Q: What are your thoughts when you are on stage? What makes you nervous?
When I am on stage, I try to not let my mind wander away from the music. I try to live in a fantasy world, unique to each piece. My goal is to get myself out of the way so that the music can come through effectively. A successful performance is not about me, the performer, but rather about the music. There are certainly times, though, when I start thinking about why the person in the front row of the audience is fidgeting so much, or about who is wearing such strong perfume!

Q: Who inspires you and in what way?
I am inspired by several people, including my sister and my violin teacher. When Emely and I perform together, I feel inspired to take chances. Also, when I feel frustrated, she helps me get back on my feet. She can relate to almost everything I am going through. My violin teacher, Ronda Cole, inspires me to go places I never would have thought possible. She continues to help me grow not only as a musician, but as a person as well.
