Alexander Paley, a winner of the 2006 "French Grammy," Les Victoires de la Musique Classique, returns to the Washington Conservatory for his 11th performance this Saturday. Widely recognized for his exceptionally broad and extensive repertoire of concerti and solo piano works, his January 8 all-Liszt concert will showcase his dazzling technical prowess and his convincing, personal interpretations.

The Washington Post called Paley's 1991 debut with the National Symphony a "flawless performance," and since then he has continued to earn similar accolades as an active recitalist and soloist with major orchestras throughout eastern and western Europe and North and South America. Born in Kishiniev, Moldova, Mr. Paley began playing the piano when he was six, gave his first recital at the age of thirteen, and at sixteen won the National Music Competition of Moldova. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory and won major awards, including First Prize at the Leipzig International Bach Competition in 1984, the Bösendorfer Prize in 1986, and the Grand Prix at the First International Pancho Vladigerov Competition in Bulgaria.
As a chamber musician, Mr. Paley has partnered with eminent artists such as the late Mstislav Rostropovich and ensembles including the Vermeer, Ysaye, and the Fine Arts string quartets. Mr. Paley lives in Paris and New York City.

New Washington Conservatory faculty member Alif Laila will present "Wondrous World Music: Sitar and Tabla" on Saturday, January 30 at 3:00 PM at the Washington Conservatory of Music's Glen Echo Park location. The concert is free (pay as you can) and no tickets are required.
Ms. Laila has performed at the Smithsonian Institution, Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Detroit Museum of Arts, Virginia Museum of Arts, Penn State University (Erie, PA), National Museum of Bangladesh, Kerala Fine Arts Society (India), and in festivals throughout the US. She has recorded with leading tabla (Indian percussion) virtuosos Anindo Chatterjee and Taari Khan, and released six CDs and two DVDs. Her DVD Hrydayaragam was featured in Women's History Month 2008. |
