An exciting new semester begins February 1. As a community music school, teaching students of all ages, we enjoy daily musical reminders that any age is the right age to learn music! 
 
The weekend of February 6 & 7 spotlights cello: a free Saturday afternoon family concert by faculty members Drew Owen (cello) and Jeffery Watson (piano) and a free Sunday afternoon cello master class with famed cellist Alisa Weilerstein (in cooperation with WPAS).
 
Mark your calendar for a Valentine jazz treat:  Sat. February 13 faculty saxophonist Marty Nau presents the music of Charlie Parker with the WCM jazz trio.

Washington Conservatory faculty members, cellist Drew Owen and pianist Jeffery Watson, will inaugurate the conservatory's series of four free monthly concerts presented in the recital room of the new site of the Washington Conservatory at Glen Echo Park. This one hour concert, appropriate for children and adults, will include Sonata in F Major by Vivaldi, Fantasy Pieces by Schumann, Sonata for cello and piano by Debussy and Three Tangos by Piazzolla.

Drew Owen, celloDrew Owen
Cellist Drew Owen performs with groups including the National Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, The Washington National Opera, and The Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra. He performed in the National Symphony's 2009 Asia tour, the Washington National Opera's 2002 Japan Tour, and the Baltimore Symphony's tour of the East and West coasts with Linda Ronstadt. As a member of Vienna's Haydn Synfonietta, he performed throughout Austria, Germany, and France. He was formerly a member and soloist with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and member of the New Orleans Symphony. Owen received his Bachelor of Music degree from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, pursued further studies in Europe, and received his Master of Music degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Jeffery Watson, pianoJeffery Watson
Pianist Jeffery Watson has appeared as soloist with the Honduran National Symphony, the Pan American Symphony, the Rosario (Argentina) Chamber Orchestra, and the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra with the Kirov Ballet. Dr. Watson was pianist with the internationally acclaimed tango quintet, QuinTango, including performances with Orquesta Sinfonica Sinaloa de las Artes (Mexico), and at Lincoln Center, the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, the U.S. Ambassador's Residence in Buenos Aires, and the International Tango Festival in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. He was associate conductor for the Kennedy Center's award-winning production of Sunday in the Park with George and is a music director and coach for the Maryland Opera Studio at the University of Maryland. He holds degrees in piano performance from DePauw University, the Eastman School of Music, and the University of Maryland.

Performing in the class for Ms. Weilerstein will be two high school students from the Washington Conservatory: Philip Kettler and Emilia McManus, performing movements from the Elgar and Lalo Cello Concertos. Julia Rosenbaum, WPAS Feder String Competition winner, will perfom a movement of the Shostakovich cello sonata.
 
Alisa Weilerstein, celloCellist Alisa Weilerstein is internationally renowned as one of the premiere soloists and chamber musicians of her generation. She has appeared with many prestigious ensembles, among them the orchestras of Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco, as well as the New York Philharmonic and National Symphony Orchestra. An ECHO "Rising Star" and alumna of Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society II, she has performed as recitalist and chamber musician in many of the world's top concert halls and festivals. Her highly praised debut recording was released on EMI classics and she was the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant.
