Greetings!

Please join us this Sunday, March 22 at 3 PM for a rare treat: a concert to honor the memory of Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu featuring three family members of three generations. Renowned flutist Julia Bogorad-Kogan will be joined by her son, violist Benjamin Ullery. During the concert her mother, Hope Castagnola Bogorad, for whom Martinu wrote a composition as a gift -- to be performed on Sunday by critically acclaimed pianist Margo Garrett -- will offer unique insight into the life of this renowned composer. I hope to see you Sunday for what promises to be a very special afternoon of music.

Musically yours,

Kathy Judd

Winner of a Grammy Award for best recording of chamber music, Julia Bogorad-Kogan became principal flutist of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra at the age of twenty-two. She has combined an orchestral career with frequent solo and recital appearances in major music capitals. As a concerto soloist with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, she is heard frequently on National Public Radio and on the nationally syndicated radio show St. Paul Sunday. She has appeared at the Marlboro, Ravinia, and Grand Teton music festivals, and served as acting principal flutist of the Boston Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, and the Minnesota Orchestra. She taught at the Oberlin Conservatory, and is currently on the faculty of the University of Minnesota School of Music. Her teachers included Marcel Moyse, Thomas Nyfenger, Robert Willoughby, and James Pellerite.

A Washington, D.C. native, Bogorad-Kogan played in the D. C. Youth Orchestra and attended Woodrow Wilson High School.

Bogorad concertThis year, 2009, marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu. To honor his memory Ms. Bogorad-Kogan created this tribute concert with her son, Minnesota Orchestra violist Benjamin Ullery, and acclaimed pianist Margo Garrett. Offering commentary at the concert will be the mother of Julia and the grandmother of Benjamin, Hope Castagnola Bogorad, one of the few living friends of Martinu and the person for whom he wrote "Merry Christmas 1941 to Hope Castagnola." Thus, three generations will celebrate the music of Martinu!

Ms. Bogorad-Kogan's two CDs on the Fullharmonic label, Handel Flute Sonatas and Flute Music of the Paris Conservatory with Margo Garrett, piano, have won critical acclaim and will be available for purchase at the concert.
