Alexander Paley
Greetings!

French conductor Jean-Claude Casadesus, with whom pianist Alexander Paley performed Tchaikovsky Concerto No. 1 with the Utah Symphony last week, described Paley as "a bit crazy, in the good sense."  The Salt Lake Tribune (2/20/09) said the "fiery, no-holds-barred performance suited the music perfectly. He got more sound out of the instrument than one might have believed possible."

I just phoned the ever-energetic Alexander (Sasha) Paley to discuss details of his Washington Conservatory concert this Friday at 7:30 pm. During our conversation he talked about his recent concert schedule. I thought you might enjoy a summary of his amazing fast-paced musical life. (If not, please scroll below to the concert information.)

In September the whirlwind began with a Rachmaninoff and Liszt solo recital in Toulouse, France and a flight to Richmond Virginia to play thirteen chamber music pieces in three days at the 11th Annual Alexander Paley Chamber Music Festival. Then he was off to Latvia to perform Tchaikovsky Concerto No. 1, an all Schubert solo concert, and a piano duo concert. Next stop was Amiens, France to perform four different solo recitals, billed as "Bach to Bartok." Then he flew to Lima, Peru to play and conduct all five Beethoven Concerti plus the Beethoven Triple Concerto. This was followed by a string of European concerts: in Paris he conducted and performed two Bach concerti and two Mendelssohn Concerti and four chamber music concerts; in Bourges, France he performed an all-Schumann solo concert plus a four-hands concert with his wife, pianist Pei-Wen Chen; in Venice he played a violin and piano duo recital. In Novosibirsk, Russia (Siberia) he performed Tchaikovsky 2nd Concerto and four chamber music concerts and in Lithuania he performed multiple concerts including Rachmaninoff 2nd Concerto, four Mozart concerti, Schubert solo pieces and the Schubert Trout Quintet plus six chamber music concerts with flute and viola. He came home to New York City last week only to immediately to fly to Salt Lake to perform with Maestro Casadesus.

Sasha says he is never happier than when he is performing. With this schedule, he must be gleeful! I hope you will join me on Friday to enjoy this very special "no-holds-barred" musician.

Musically yours,
