YogaXoga Newsletter
October 2011
 Greetings!

Hi there! Hope this newsletter finds you very well...It's beginning to feel like fall even here in the desert with cooler mornings and evenings and a less intense mid-day warmth.   As our YogaXoga Health Coaching test group kicked off this past month, I've been struck by the idea that it's never, ever too late to take small, but meaningful steps toward our wellness...whether it's a simple green drink in the morning, committing to doing what works for your fitness or taking time to breathe and be still with an anxious kiddo....that's our theme for this newsletter --small steps forward are truly steps forward that give us the momentum we need to make healthy and sustainable changes.

Below, you'll find:

Enjoy and be well,

New Year's Resolutions in October...huh?

Ok, so New Year's resolutions may be the farthest thing from your mind right now walkerwith halloween costumes, thanksgiving travel plans and Santa lists on deck in just weeks or months from now.  I simply ask that you humor me for a moment.
  • What if we got a head start on those all-encompassing, life-changing things that we resolve or intend to do in the new year only to fall short by summer?
  • What if it doesn't have to be HUGE changes, but small changes moving you in the right direction?
  • What if we bucked the system and instead of throwing out our healthy habits for holiday traditions, we make an attempt for the two to co-exist?

I know. Maybe it's the desert air...but I really think this could work.  Here's a few examples of what I'm thinking:

  • Wanting to eat better? Start now with a green smoothie in the morning or 2 more vegetables each day.   food
  • Intending to workout 4x/week? Maybe you're going to the gym once a week, so a good next step might be adding just one more visit or workout at home with a favorite DVD and a neighbor.
  • More yoga?  Invite a friend and commit to a class that's nearby so that you'll be more likely to keep going.
For more ideas, check out Small Steps Toward Wellness. My thinking is that if we grease the skids in these last three months of the year, we'll begin to create healthier habits...I've read it takes 28 days to form a habit.  So, we have plenty of time to build sustainable, healthy habits that will make us even more successful with those intentions and resolutions for 2012!

Are you with me?  Join us in our Resolutions in October Challenge by sending your resolutions/intentions to Heidi@yogaxoga.com or post a comment on YogaXoga's Facebook Page. We'll send you emails with healthy holiday recipes and ways to "sprinkle" your exercise into already busy schedules.  We can help each other take small steps toward better wellness...

Simple Smoothie Recipes

When we first got our Vitamix, I experimented with many different fruits and vitamixvegetables and flavors, the more the better.  But in the last few weeks, I've been gravitating toward more simple recipes that yield clean and refreshing flavors. Give them a try and let me know what you think:

Kale Wake-Me-Up:

1 cup coconut water
1/2 cup coconut kefir (I use coconut, but you could use dairy kefir or plain yogurt)
1/2 cup OJ
1 lemon, peeled and halved
3-4 leaves of kale, stems removed
1 apple, quartered and cored
1 inch sliver of fresh ginger
1 cup of ice
2 scoops of protein powder  (My favorite is Vega's Whole Food Smoothie Infusion)

Orange Goodness:

1 1/2 cup coconut water
1 lemon, peeled and halved
1 tomato, or handful of cherry tomatos
1 orange, peeled and halved
1 carrot, peeled and halved
1 apple, quartered and cored
1 cup of frozen strawberries or other favorite berry
Add ice if you used fresh berries instead of frozen
2 scoops protein powder
