YogaXoga Newsletter
June 2011
 Greetings!

Happy Summer!  I hope that this newsletter finds you enjoying your season of warm sunny days and maybe (for some) a slower pace of life.  Summer can be a time where our routine is disrupted and we lose those activities that keep us calm, less stressed and more ourselves.  What are those for you?  Any way to sneak those healthy habits back into your summer?

  • YogaXoga schedule, with class updates and introducing our newest YogaXoga teacher, Joy Sutter.  Also, save the date - Saturday, August 13th - I'll be back in KC and offering a morning yoga workshop - more details soon.
  • Yoga Cooling Breath - a great breathing technique to keep you cool this summer.
Enjoy your summer and remember to take a little time just for you,

Heidi

Yoga Cooling Breath - Just in Time for This Heat!

resting

Maybe it's this desert heat and my trying to acclimate...but I find myself practicing this breath frequently.

Often in yoga class, we'll remind you to breathe in and out through your nose.  For class, that's the best way to breathe because we want to maintain warmth within your body to keep your muscles warm and to avoid injury.

When we're too warm, we can breathe in through the mouth and out through the nose to help cool us down.  Here's how to do it:

  • Find a comfortable seated position.  If seated on the floor, you may want to lift your hips by sitting on a rolled yoga mat or pillow.
  • Either pucker your lips like you're about to sip on a straw or curl the outer edges of your tongue and stick your tongue out slightly (rolled or taco tongue).  Either position is fine.  Inhale through your mouth.  This may create a whisper sound - that's fine.
  • At the top of your inhale, pause just long enough to close your mouth and exhale through your nose, releasing the warmer air.
  • Repeat 8-10 times and then check in with how you feel, breathing a few slow steady breaths.

What's New on our YogaXoga Blog:

High Intensity Workouts seem to be popping up all over the place.  Boot camps and DVD series like P90x, Insanity and TurboFire are on our TVs with infomercial deals. And, yes, your daily run or hike can be high-intensity too.   Be sure to keep your "listen to your body" attitude and ease into it to avoid injury.

Check out our post on Yoga After High-Intensity Workouts for stretches you can do to complement your workouts.

Sam and I have been getting up super early (that's in the 5 a.m. range) to walk Charli (as it gets hot by 9) and then we've been working out with Shawn T and the Insanity Workout Series.  Click here to read my review.

While back in Kansas City this past spring, I made two amazing product discoveries made with Argan Oil:  Pre de Provence Argan Oil Soap and DermOrganics Conditioning Shampoo.

Update from Arizona

patio

Sam relaxing on our back patio...

For months now, when I tell folks we're new here in Phoenix, the first thing they ask is if we've had our first summer.  When I've said no -- they chuckle or smile wryly with a "just wait" expression.

I'm happy to report that so far, so good.  Yes, it's hot.  And it is a dry heat, but that just means you feel like you're in an oven and not a steamy shower. Still hot.  But, we're enjoying our desert adventure.

We've been spending our weekends working in the yard and doing some planting.

Plants are doing well so far...

I'm determined to see if I can "green up" my brown thumb with some hanging baskets and hearty potted plants.  I'm continuing to teach a couple of classes in Scottsdale and am looking for other opportunities as well.

As many of you know, I have a heart for the efforts to fight human trafficking and have found StreetlightPHX

, an organization here that raises awareness about the issue of trafficking and helps child victims to heal and move forward.  I'm excited to begin my volunteer training this summer.

Also this summer, we have a trip to Flagstaff (where it's usually 20+ degrees cooler) planned, my 20 year H.S. reunion in KC and a Yoga Therapy 4-day training here in Phoenix.

Busy summer - as I'm sure it is for you too!

I miss all of you... and look forward to seeing you soon...

Keep in touch and be well,

Heidi
