Yoga in 2011: Easing Back into Your Yoga Practice

If you've found yourself off of the yoga wagon for awhile, you are not alone.  The holidays are busy, it's cold, you don't have time...I know the excuses...I've even used them myself!

But it's a new year...so no more excuses... here's a step by step guide to getting you back on your yoga mat.

Step 1: Give yourself a break for getting off course...it's ok...accept it and let it go.  No looking back.

Step 2: Set an attainable goal for January...rather than set a really aggressive goal for the year, start with just this month...what's a doable goal for you?  Maybe yoga at home once a week and get to class 2x this month?  This is just a building block - you can add more for February and subsequent months... BUT do set a goal and write it down.

Step 3: If you're yoga-ing at home, anticipate the usual distractions and try to minimize them:  Turn the computer and phone off, write your to-do list down, plan your yoga during the kids' naptime... Set yourself up for success. And when it doesn't go so smoothly...give yourself a break and try again.

Step 4: Start small...maybe just 20 or 30 minutes at first.  I know during our move process, I couldn't wait to find my mat and do some yoga.  But when I did, I felt too overwhelmed with things to do to do an entire hour...but 20 minutes of breathing and movement felt great.  Allow yourself to be your own teacher at home...listen to what your body is telling you. See my 20 minutes of Yoga - Get Me Started Yoga Class.

Step 5: Find a class near you and commit to going at least three times to get a good impression of the class...put it on the calendar and if possible, invite a friend...you'll be more likely to get there and it's more fun to go with a friend.  I know several YogaXoga friends who go to class together and then catch up after for tea and a chat.   Take advantage of the New Year specials... many places offer deals this time of year, including YogaXoga...see our New Year, New You Special above.

Step 6: Take a moment to re-evaluate the month  - how did it go? what worked and what didn't? Make adjustments for the next month or next week... and move forward...we have to live in balance of work, family, health...that means that sometimes we will be out of balance... as I would say in yoga class...acknowledge that...and let it go...and move forward.

Update from Arizona

First, thank you to all of you who came to class or stopped by (despite the hectic holiday schedule) to see me off on my Arizona adventure...thank you for the cards, gifts, hugs and smiles.  I so appreciate them and still do! Your cards and letters have wallpapered our very beige and plain apartment :).

Somewhere in NM...
Beginning December 20th, we had two really good weather days for travel.  We took the southern route through Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Alberquerque, Flagstaff and south to Phoenix.  Charli did great...We perched her up in the backseat with her bed elevated in a laundry basket and it worked great... (the very small mild dose of tranquilizer and Rescue Remedy drops didn't hurt either...) We listened to Christmas music most of the way and enjoyed the views...

In Phoenix, we stayed a couple of days in a hotel near Sam's work...Charli and I were hanging out poolside by the firepit most days...until our stuff arrived for the apartment.

View just outside our apartment...
We enjoyed Christmas and the weekend in Tucson with Sam's family and then headed back to  start exploring potential areas of town to live.  It still feels like we're on a perpetual vacation and not quite "at home", but the warmer (though not exactly warm) weather and sunny days help a lot. I've found the Trader Joe's, Target, Whole Foods and dog park...so all is well.

Sidenote: I know I always tell you to practice your balance poses to prepare for icy sidewalks...I didn't think I would encounter those here but I've had two near slips walking Charli -- we've had several nights of hard freeze and the rain/sprinkler run-off could be deadly... we'll all have to be careful this winter...:)

Miss you all... happy yoga-ing... Enjoy & Be Well... Heidi
