Health Care Reform:
Now or Never!
The president needs your help. It's make or break time for healthcare reform.

The choice is simple. We either do everything to help pass this plan or we postpone any significant healthcare reform for another generation. And if we don't win on healthcare, all other issues that we care about are at risk.

We know which side the Party of No - and the insurance lobby - are on. We now need your help to make sure ordinary Americans win.

The support of every Democratic member of Congress is needed. Congressman Farr's vote is assured, but we have been asked to call Democratic voters in neighboring Districts. We'll ask them to call their representatives and urge them to support the healthcare bill.

Sam Farr Gets 100%
In the past month, Congressman Sam Farr has been honored by the League of  Conservation Voters and by the Humane Society. The League awarded him a perfect 100 percent rating on its annual National Environmental Scorecard.

The 2009 Scorecard included 13 House votes, ranging from clean energy and climate change to public lands and wildlife conservation. The full 2009 National Environmental Scorecard can be found at
http://www.lcv.org/scorecard.

The Humane Society on Wednesday presented Congressman Farr with an award for his leadership on animal protection legislation in 2009.

Rep. Farr received a Legislative Leader award for introducing legislation to fund research and recovery programs for the Southern sea otter, and for his work to close a loophole that allows large-scale puppy mills to bypass laws that assure basic welfare standards.

"We're grateful to the many Members of Congress who are helping to forge a path to a more humane future through their demonstrated leadership on animal protection legislation," said Michael Markarian, president of the Humane Society Legislative Fund. "Our animal welfare laws are a reflection of our basic values and attitudes shared by people across the country."
California ListWomen Helping Women Run for Office
On February 20, the California List and Emily's List brought a workshop on campaign success for women to the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas. Current and former electeds mentored and passed on their experience and tips to those interested in running for office (pictured with workshop leader Bettina Duval are former Supervisor Karin Strasser-Kaufmann, Salinas City Council Member Janet Barnes, and Supervisor Jane Parker). The women in the room spontaneously decided to form a support group for candidates, which will meet for the first time on April 5th in Salinas.

If you would like to join the group or would like more information, please send an e-mail to tomorrowsleaders@montereycountydemocrats.org. See more pictures of the event here.
