How well do you know the YMCA?
When you think of the YMCA, what comes to mind? There are so many answers to this open question so allow me to get on my soap box for minute.
The challenge and shortfall of many YMCA's in America is our ability to communicate all that we do. Most of the people we serve utilize our YMCA for one, maybe two services. It might be that you utilize the Y for soccer and swim lessons. It might be just running on the treadmill.
Do you ever stop and think about everything else that we provide and the amazing impact we have on the community? In 2009, we DIRECTLY served 12,047 men, women and children. But more importantly, do you stop and think about the impact on the disadvantaged and those in need in our community? All too often, we think of charitable work as providing basic needs; things like food, shelters, clothing and basic supplies. But what about a safe place to be during afterschool? Or a child that wants to come to summer camp but one of their parents lost their job? Or someone who wants to lose weight but can't afford a membership? These are all needs of belonging; the need to feel connected and a part of the community. The YMCA meets those needs every single day.
Last year, we provided over $91,484 in scholarships to this community. Through donations from people like you, we were able to provide those scholarships!
I write all this not so you will donate. Rather, I write this so you may think a little differently when you think of the YMCA. If I could, I would show you the hundreds of people we impact each day. I would show you over 35 programs that we provide to the community.
What is the Pickens County YMCA? We are a Christian community non-profit organization providing needed programs and services that are significant and impacts thousands of people.
