December 2009
Merry Christmas from the YMCA!

When I begin to hear Christmas songs and start seeing Christmas decorations go up in stores, I get excited!  IT'S CHRISTMAS!!!  But, I also think of the busy schedule ahead.  The shopping, the parties, running from one family to the next and the oh so large crowds in the stores.  I can't help but stop and think, "What is Christmas really about?"

Is it just about the season or is it about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ?

During the next few weeks, I want to encourage you to stop and spend time with your immediate family.  Talk about the real reason for Christmas.  Reflect on the fact that the Creator and Lord of ALL chose to come into this broken world to save us. Why did he do this?  Because He loves us more than we can comprehend.

I would also like to encourage you to think about those whose Christmas may not be a bright as yours.  Visit a nursing home, shop from an angel tree, help a foster family or engage in your church's outreach programs.  Give of your time to someone in need.  Do what Jesus did for us; love others and sacrifice yourself for their sake.

Christmas is a great time of cheer and celebration.  But it is also a season of remembering.  Remembering the reason why Christmas exists in the first place.  Remembering why Jesus came into this broken world.  Remembering that there are many people suffering right here in Pickens County.  And remember, you can do something about it.
