Excel: What is the PROPER function?
Converting text to proper case
Have you ever received a spreadsheet where the text was in all lowercase, uppercase, or a combination of both? There is a quick way to convert text to proper case by using the Excel data function PROPER.
The PROPER function is used to capitalize the first letter in each word of a text value. For example, TIMOTHY GRAY could be converted to Timothy Gray using the PROPER function.
Scenario: You have first and last names in all capital letters in cells A2:A7 and you want to convert those names so that the first letter in each name is capitalized. See the example below.
Example formula: =PROPER(A2:A7). See Figure 1
The formula above will convert all names located in A2:A7 to a propercase format. See Figure 2.
Additional tips: You can also use the UPPER function to convert text to all upper case and the LOWER function to convert text to all lower case.
