Spring Fever |
Jack Noe, Communication Coordinator for Seven Oaks Church in Columbia, recently made a visit to the Presbyterian Community in Lexington (next door to the Presbytery office). While there he snapped these photos of Seven Oak members and residents Dorothy Asman and Jim McElveen. As you can see, Dorothy has an extremely green thumb! Her gardening abilities benefit the entire community since the plot is located in sight of many of the main buildings.
Pictured above is Jim planting containers that will dress up his cottage for the warm weather to come.

Bird Story Update |
Many of you may remember the article about the Summer Tanager that we found dead outside the Presbytery office - the victim of a collision with the glass window. This beautiful bird did not completely die in vain: it was given to I.Lehr Brisbin, our Presbytery's Restoration of Creation Enabler who holds a South Carolina DNR permit to salvage such dead birds for scientific and educational purposes. This permit is the result of a cooperative relationship between the Presbytery and the University of Georgia's Savannah River Ecology Laboratory.
The following is from Dr. Brisbin:
"The tanager is now in their laboratory freezer waiting to be sent to a taxidermist to be made into a study specimen for final placement in, what we hope, will eventually be a nature resource study and education center at Camp Fellowship. You can be sure, moreover, that when future campers and other groups view with awe this bird's brilliant red-orange plumage, the story of the little Painted Bunting and "the last shall be first" will be told over and over, LOUD AND CLEAR." |

| Mothers' Day Offering |
|
This Sunday, May 11th is Mothers' Day. It will be celebrated in our churches by the collection of a special offering. The money collected will help offset the cost of residents of the Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina who can no longer afford to pay their own way.
This ministry not only belongs to those called to work in one of the retirement communities, but it belongs to all Presbyterians in the state, who over the past 20 years have provided over $25 million in benevolent care. During 2008, the cost of care for residents who live in our Presbyterian Retirement Communities and qualify for financial assistance will be approximately $2.1 million.
Please give generously to help defray these costs and continue this important ministry among us. |

Passport Fair |
|

|
Is your church planning a mission trip abroad this summer? Then it is time to remind your participants about passports! Did you know that if you have youth under the age of 16 going on your trip and need a passport, both parents must be present to make their application? Scheduling the visit can be problematic for a busy family. Therefore, South Carolina Postmasters have announced expanded additional local Saturday passport events for customer convenience. All SC Post Offices that are certified acceptance sites will be open for passport applications on Saturday, May 17th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Click here to fill out the proper form and find the nearest location of your passport-ready Post Office. Click here to view a passport application fees chart.
