Footcare Ministry Volunteer Shares Story |
All ministry, when performed with a servant attitude, has the ability to touch both the recipient and the giver. Such was the case last weekend during a "mobile" footcare day at The Salvation Army. Several footcare ministry volunteers from Eastminster participated in Mission: Possible II - a day of service around the community. Johnnie Pearce, coordinator for the footcare ministry, has written a beautiful account of that day spent washing the feet of Columbia's homeless. Click here to read - and be touched. |

Habitat Update |
This cloudy cool spell has been a bit depressing for me. However, the garden thinks otherwise and has exploded with blossom. As you can see, the clematis and pyracantha are trying their best to out do each other! Pale yellow iris are putting on their own show as well.
The birds have been exceptional this week. Bright yellow Gold Finches, Cardinals and Red-bellied Woodpeckers are like bees around the feeders. Momma and Daddy Blue bird are constantly flying back and forth ferrying tidbits to their babies in our bird house. An Indigo Bunting made an appearance on his way north. Such a rich blue color! Sadly, we found a fiery orange-red Summer Tanager dead outside the office - the downside of having an all-glass building. And just yesterday I saw for the very first time a Black-throated Blue Warbler.
All these colorful creatures remind me of a story that my mother would read to me from a very old Child Craft volume. It was titled something like "How the Birds Got Their Colors". As I remember it, during creation, God was handing out colors to the birds - each of them clamoring for the shade of his choice. After God finished assigning colors there was one little bird remaining. When he approached God he noted that all the colors were taken and there were none left. God remarked that indeed all the colors were claimed, however, since the little bird had waited his turn he would reward this meek little fellow with ALL the colors! And that's how the Painted Bunting wound up being the most beautiful bird of all ("...and the last shall be first!" - Matt. 19:30). I haven't seen a Painted Bunting - I'm told you can spot them in the Low Country occasionally. I marvel at God's handiwork with these little creatures. Indeed...a palette of color on the wing!

| Sale Featuring Ten Thousand Villages |
 |
Ten Thousand Villages of Columbia, Inc. is having a two-day sale, just in time for Mother's Day. The sale, featuring handmade jewelry, accessories and home decor items, will be held May 2-3 at Incarnation Lutheran Church, located at 3005 Devine Street at Sims Street. Sale hours are 3-8 p.m. on May 2 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 3. Cashiers will not be equipped to take credit/debit cars, so cash or checks only.
Although Columbia's Ten Thousand Villages (TTV) store closed, the local TTV board of directors will continue promoting fair trade and supporting artisans in 32 developing countries through a series of sales. The non-profit TTV helps fight world poverty by ensuring that artisans, many who are women supporting families, receive a fair price for the items they produce for TTV. The sales will also allow local board members to maintain contact with former volunteers and customers in hopes that one day a new TTV store will open in the Midlands.
