Footcare Ministry

Footcare Ministry
Ladson and Eastminster Churches have teamed up to form a unique ministry in downtown Columbia.  Volunteers from these congregations were trained by a group from First Presbyterian Church, Atlanta to perform footcare to the homeless in our area.  Each Tuesday afternoon, the volunteers gather at Christ Care Ministries on North Main Street and serve four "guests".  Not only do they perform the usual footcare/pedicure procedures, they are trained to look for conditions requiring a doctor's care.  A local medical network has agreed to give free services for those guests needing medical attention.  Rev. Joyce Wright, Pastor of the Ladson Church, reports that she was overwhelmed by the sense of spirituality she experienced on the first day.

Good News from the Sudan!

Dr. Ruun Haruun
For the first time in the history of the Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church, on February 29th, the first synod was officially announced.  The Sudan Evangelical Synod is the first of its kind in Sudan.  The new synod is made up of two presbyteries, namely, the North Presbytery and the West presbytery.  There are about 70 ordained ministers and pastors who make up the membership.  The PC(USA) has been instrumental in fostering seminaries and churches in Sudan.  Trinity Presbytery has a long-standing relationship with Dr. Haruun Ruun (pictured above on the left), Minister of Humanitarian Affairs in Sudan, and is a member of Shandon Presbyterian Church.  Dr. Ruun urged the gathering on the 29th to be a community that provides hope and reconciliation in the beleaguered country.

There are plans in the coming years to form more presbyteries, possibly in the southern and eastern parts of the country.

How To Write Good

Here is an email excerpt from a sender who wishes to remain anonymous!

Some pointers on "Effective Writing":
  1. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
  2. Avoid cliches like the plague-they're old hat.
  3. Comparisons are as bad as cliches.
  4. Don't use commas, that, are not, necessary.
  5. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.
  6. Be more or less specific.
  7. Use youre spell chekker to avoid mispeling and to catch typograhpical errers.
  8. Don't never use no double negatives.
  9. Poofread carefully to see if you any words out.
  10. And always be sure to finish what

Planning Calendars
Planning Calendar
It's that time of year to order the Presbyterian Planning Calendars!  There is so much more information in this beautiful calendar than just dates!

This 19-month calendar that begins with June 2008 contains many aids for pastors and other church leaders. The calendar, whose theme is "I will sing to the Lord as long as I live" (Psalm 104:33), uses the art of three older adult Presbyterians. The gifts of these three-and other older adults-enrich the lives of God's people, encouraging individuals of all ages to join the song of praise to our Creator.

Click here to download the order form.  Churches, please note: You must send your check with your order.  The cost will be $6.50 per calendar and the deadline for ordering is April 25th.  If you have questions, please call Lisa Mallory at the Presbytery office at 794-1225 or 800-321-4124.

Prayer of the Iris
Purple iris
Like the iris
in the side yard,
I have stopped blooming.
Dig me up, O Spirit,
and split me; where I have grown
calloused, break me open;
then drive me deeper
into darkness,
where I wait for you
to pull my yearning
to live fully
into the light;
then let me offer
my purple and gold freely
to all who pass by.
