Low vitamin D levels in pregnant women could cause their babies to develop cavities
International Association for Dental Research
(IADR) 2008
R. SCHROTH et al,
A
new finding suggests that low levels of vitamin D for
pregnant mothers may translate to more cavities for
their babies.
Canadian researchers measured vitamin D levels of
206 pregnant women and then examined their infants
at a follow up appointment.
Ninety percent of
all the
mothers in this group had inadequate vitamin D
concentrations. Scientific studies have estimated
that perhaps half of all Americans are vitamin D
deficient.
About a third of the 135 babies in the study had
cavities when they were examined at an average 16
months of age. When the researchers looked back at
pregnancy records, they found that the mothers of
those infants who had cavities were significantly more
likely to have had
lower levels of vitamin D.
Baby teeth begin developing as early as six weeks in
utero, and vitamin D is known to be involved with the
formation of protective tooth enamel.
Dr Eisenstein's
comments:
There is scientific evidence that links low levels of
vitamin D and low levels of probiotics
to an increased
risk of many medical conditions. Now thanks to the
above findings that list includes
cavities in young children.
Dr Bruce Hollis, an expert scientist on vitamin D, in
his presentation
"Vitamin D Requirement
During Pregnancy and Lactation" showed that in
order to
have adequate Vitamin D in your breastmilk
you need at least 4,000IU (.1 mg) either through sun
exposure
(15-20 minutes a day
with 40% body exposure will give you about 5,000-
10,000IU) or from Vitamin D supplementation. With
this
protocol you will not need to give any Vitamin D
supplementation to the nursing
baby.
Dr Eisenstein's Daily Minimum Recommendation for
Vitamin D
Based on the Latest Scientific Findings
1. Pregnant and nursing mothers- 2 ProD5 daily (no
need to supplement nursing babies as they will
receive vitamin D from their mothers milk). Only one
ProD5 if you are taking the Homefirst Prenatal
Vitamins.
2. Children and
Adolescents-
1 ProD5
every other day
3. Adults-1 ProD5 daily
4. Adults with Chronic Illness-2 ProD5
daily
5. Colds and flu adults-1 ProD50 daily
for 3
days
6. Colds and Flu Children
up to 25 lbs.....1 ProD5 daily for 3 days
26-50 lbs ....... 2 ProD5 daily for 3 days
51-75 lbs........ 3 ProD5 daily for 3 days
75-100 lbs...... 4 ProD5 daily for 3 days
100+ lbs adult dose for 3 days.
The 25(OH)D blood test can determine your Vitamin D
levels.
100IU of Vitamin D will raise your blood levels
approximately 1ng/ml.
Normal Blood levels should be in the range of
40-60ng/ml.
Blood levels for chronic
conditions 80-100ng/ml.
