500th
Cast Winners
Because we had so many great submissions for
the 500th cast competition, we awarded more prizes than we originally
announced. Tom Baldwin won a seat at a Manager Tools conference and
Individual Licenses for life for both Manager Tools and Career Tools.
We also awarded Pierre N, Sven Kosack, Matt Brigance, Joel
Bancroft-Connors and Nicholas Dominguez seats at a Manager Tools
conference. Our two 'extra' winners, Linda Morton and Matthew Lingerich
won a year's License to Manager Tools or Career Tools.
We don't have room here to show you all the
winning entries, but you can read Tom's below. All the winning
entries are on the website. And, you can read an ever changing
selection of the other entries on the homepage.
In the course of all of our reading, we all
exchanged numerous emails exclaiming about the stories. We were touched
by the thanks and appreciation shared. Many of you told us you didn't
even need to be entered, but you wanted us and everyone else to know
how much we were helping. We promise you, it worked. We were all
overwhelmed by the comments, and we thank you for them.
Tom Baldwin's Entry
I typically write my performance reviews for
my team during the holidays. Last week, in preparation for annual
reviews I send out 360 feedback forms...
The next day, I get stopped in the hall by
our lead software engineers, "got your 360 request last night."
Preparing for my response of why I asked, etc. They say, "You know we
don't do those around here." Again, thinking of what to say they
continue, "We haven't had a manager be proactive and do those in 3
years." Finally, as I am trying to determine my rebuttal they say,
"Can we report to you?"
Just so you know I am in product
development, on the marketing side.
For a fleeting second I felt good receiving
the feedback; however it also made me realize how low the bar is.
That is what Manager Tools means to me. It's
about improving the working lives of others. It also keeps me aware of
the impact good management has on everyone in the organization and my
responsibility to improve my own effectiveness.
Thanks for all you do.
