Honesty And Your Team
A while ago, we asked the question ‘what’s the one thing you most admire about your boss?’ on our Facebook page. One of the most popular answers was ‘open and direct in communication’.
At conferences, we ask ‘how many of you, provided it was done ethically and respectfully, would like your manager to tell you how you’re doing more often, even if it were negative?’. Want to take a guess at how many people say yes? Everybody.
Time and again, we’re faced with the evidence that everyone wants to hear more often how they’re doing. We all want it for ourselves. Why would our directs not want it?
And yet, every conference, we see the same thing. We start to explain the Feedback Model and we get a long list of ‘what if’s’ and ‘I can’t do that because’s'.
After the conference, we get emails saying ‘I tried it, and it worked – my direct was happy to get feedback’.
There’s only so many ways we can say this to you: in the same way you want more feedback from your boss, your directs want more feedback from you.
So here’s an easy way to dip your toe in the water: the Starter Feedback Model. ‘Can I share something with you?’ ‘When you finish your presentation on time, it means we can finish our meeting on time. Thanks’.
Try it once today. Pick your best performer. You don’t need to tell them what it’s all about. You don’t need to introduce it. Don’t make a big brewhaha about it. Plan what you’re going to say, and say it. If the world doesn't end, THEN listen to the Starter Feedback cast, and introduce it properly.
We guarantee you, the effect will convince you that it’s worth doing.
Clarification
Last week in our Newsletter we said: "Mark and Wendii's O3 is Tuesday at 2pm – but we hold it then less than 25% of the time" and "O3's can be scheduled, regular, and rarely missed".
A number of you said that didn't make sense to you. We're sorry we weren't as clear as we could have been. Just because it's scheduled at 2 pm, and we don't have it THEN, doesn't mean we don't have it. We never miss it, but it gets MOVED A LOT, because of Mark's calendar (he just can't do it when on a plane, or presenting, or with a client).
It's important to note that putting things on the calendar is a BIG start to anything. But it's not because it happens then..it's initially just because those things that are on your calendar are MUCH more likely to get done than things that aren't.
