Growth
& No Growth Jobs
One of
the other requests we had from our Interview Creation Tool™
beta-testers was the ability to duplicate interviews. They posited that
they would have a role which they’d create an interview for,
and later another role which was similar and they’d have to
create a whole new interview.
Couldn’t
we just use the old one as a template and change a few of the answers,
they asked. After some consideration, we decided not to allow it.
Here’s
the logic. Every time you interview for a role, you have a chance to
really think about what you need, not just now, but in the next year to
18 months. If you’re hiring for the job you need done right
now, you’re doing it wrong. You need to be hiring for the
role you have now, and for the role you’ll have in 18 months
– and the candidate you select needs to have the potential to
get there and do that job.
Each
time you interview, you’ll be able see a bit further into the
future. That job will change each time as you get a clearer picture. By
considering that future, you’ll hire better staff.
You’ll also have less turnover, which we all agree is costly
both in dollars and in time.
But
what if this is no-growth job?
Really?
None?
Do you not want someone YOU can delegate to? Someone who you can trust
to look after things when you go on vacation? Someone you can grow into
your role so that you can move on? Do you NEVER want to leave your job?
Is the
industry not growing or changing? Do you think that these 'no
growth' jobs will be there in 3 years time and exactly the
same? We can't imagine a job where that is the case. As a
teenager, Wendii worked as a cashier in a DIY store. (For Americans,
think Lowe's or Home Depot). It was the most no
growth job you could imagine. Yet, when she goes into a DIY store now,
she
see completely different cash registers, different customer service
procedures, different ways of splitting the roles. Anyone who worked
with her then will have HAD to grow into this new way of cashiering.
Don't
be fooled. Review each job carefully before you hire, and hire for your
future needs as well as those you have right now.
