Instant Messaging
My son Drake told me the other day he saw a snarky poster of a pop star with the caption, "Music: You're Doing it Wrong." He thought it was hilarious.
Here's one for us: if you've got an instant messaging client up on your desktop all day, you could be posterized, too: "Management: You're Doing it Wrong".
Instant Messaging is almost always a bad idea for a manager. It's a distraction. Here's a way to think about it: Do you like pop up windows when you're on the web? NO? Hate being distracted and had to close each one to get back to whatever you were doing? Imagine you had ten or so pop-ups every minute.
That is what those IMs are doing to you. Distracting you. Since you cannot multi-task, you end up losing your train of thought, and producing lower quality work on the other thing you're working on.
A software developer told me recently he just could NOT not have his IM client up: it was "the way our company communicated". I told him my thoughts on Facebook. The developers essentially "produce" all the value that members get out of FB. And did you see the movie, The Social Network? What happened whenever anyone interrupted someone who was doing important work? "LEAVE HIM ALONE - He's wired in." What those developers were doing was IMPORTANT.
So, let's make an exception: If what you're doing isn't important, go ahead and be distracted with all those IMs. ;-)
