Interview Guidance

As the economy heats up a bit, you're going to find yourself interviewing folks. Hopefully, this will be true even if you're a NON-Manager, because your boss asks for your input. Here are some basic reminders you've got to know and do.

Attention Must Be Paid. Interviewing is the most important task a manager does. Get it right.

All together Now. If you're the hiring manager, have everyone ask the same basic questions. Otherwise, everybody is going to go with their gut. It makes no sense systemically to have everyone report on interviews that were all different. How can you be sure they asked good questions? The beauty of this is that you only have to prepare one interview.

Say No. If you have any doubts, you have to say no. The only thing worse than the pain an open position causes is the time a poor performer takes to manage. SAY NO.

Take Notes. Try to write down what was SAID, not what you thought. When you brief others, you can talk about behavior, not just how you felt. Don't feel bad for writing for 20-30 seconds after the candidate finishes answering. This is a big decision. Don't apologize for gathering data on big decisions.

Use The Interview Results Capture Meeting Guidance. (There's a cast for that ;-)) Everyone first reports a "hire/don't hire" recommendation, followed by data to support that recommendation in four "fit" areas: Interpersonal, Cultural (Firm), Job Skills, and Technical (If applicable).

"After months of ineffective job searching, I subscribed to your Interview tools package and gained new confidence in my processes. It was long. It was hard work ... really hard. Just like you promised. But hard work feels good in its own right, and success is sweeter for it. With the aid of your advice, I accepted a fantastic offer three days ago." Melissa Smith
