President's Message

Dear OASN Members,
"To Be a Nurse...
To practice the science of nursing requires a nurse who can perform a thorough and accurate physical assessment by inspecting, palpating, percussing and auscultating the patient's body.
To ascend to the art of nursing, requires a nurse willing to perform a thorough and accurate assessment of the person via inspection of the character, palpation of the mind, percussion of the heart and auscultation of the soul." Karen Bugaj
School nurses practice this science and this art daily. Our patients are our students and our staff. They come to us with physical and mental distress. We touch their lives with our knowledge, with our care, and with our understanding. Now it's time to take a little time to rejuvenate our selves; to build on our science and extend our art to each other.
Please join us for a time of learning and networking at our upcoming 38th annual conference- The Art & Science of School Nursing in the 21st Century. The conference committee has done such a tremendous job of planning the educational sessions and activities. It is absolutely amazing how they have put together such an event, a gift, for all of us. I hope to see you there.
Sincerely,
Eva

Silent Auction
A New Challenge to All Regions!
Last year's silent auction was record setting - $1600! This time last year I issued a challenge to each region. It was amazing how many members from every region stepped up. Every region was well represented. Thank you for your generosity!
Again this year, we need items for the OASN Silent Auction. We are just weeks away from the start of the OASN Silent Auction. The plans have been made, but without your help the choices will be few; and our contribution to the OASN Endowment Fund will suffer.
Let's have some fun!
Each region is challenged to contribute the number of auction items equal to or greater than 5 percent of your active membership. The challenge this year is to exceed last year's proceeds. Our new goal? $2000
Below are a few ideas for your silent auction contribution:
Unused Gift Certificates
Books
Small appliances in good working order
Purses
Jewelry
Themed Baskets
DVDs & CDs
Pictures
School Nurse Apparel, professional equipment, and novelty items
We appreciate any quality items you are able to donate.
Be creative. Have a group of items that have a common theme? Make a basket with them. Many small items that may not be able to stand alone can also come together to make one great basket!
Please contact Judy Marrinan by email at judy@marrinan.us about any contributions. Also, I will be at conference starting Thursday evening. You can call my cell 937-475-5230 if you need anything.
All proceeds benefit the OASN Endowment Fund
Thank you for your generosity! |

February 2011 Membership Update
Submitted by Dawn Abbott, Membership Director
Happy New Year from OASN Membership!
As membership director, I visited the NASN Web site to make sure that the links I would be sharing in this newsletter were correct. I was surprised to find out that some of the information in my own member profile was outdated! I encourage you to update your membership profile today!
As you know, e-mail is the most efficient means of getting vital information to members. To ensure that NASN/OASN has your most current member profile including your most current e-mail address, please go to http://www.nasn.org/portal.html and click on "Member Profile", Log In and update your member profile.
Or visit the OASN Website at www.oasn.org and click on "Join OASN" near the top. This will direct you to the NASN association portal as well.
OASN membership data has now been tracked for 16 consecutive months from September 2009 thru December 2010. Please see more detailed membership information in the OASN Annual Report made available at the OASN Website and at the spring OASN conference.
A. January 2010: 470 members up 8.5% from January 2009. Unfortunately, membership began decreasing in May 2010 and continued to decline through December 2010. The 436 members at year-end represents the low number for the year. (2010 decrease of -7.23%).
B. I challenge you to invite other school nurses to join OASN/NASN. Keep in mind that other non-ODE licensed nurses in Ohio schools are welcome to join as "Associate" members and will still reap many of the same membership benefits as active members.
The OASN winning region for the most increased membership has been determined and will be announced at the spring OASN conference. Stay tuned for this exciting announcement!
Did you know that Nursing journal subscriptions range $63 - 126 annually, or $34 - 63 to purchase single articles? Included in your NASN/OASN membership, is the Journal of School Nursing which is mailed directly to you or available online.
NASN uses several Web-based systems to deliver content to you. Below are the major systems with information on how to login.

Mary Kozarec has volunteered to be the new President Elect for SWOSNA. Election will take place at the Feb. 12 SWOSNA meeting. Thanks to Mary for stepping up and serving SWOSNA. There are now two postions that need to be filled: Strategic Planning and Membership Chair. Judy Ganguly has diligently served as the Membership chairs for over 10 years and would like to see someone else take this over. Please contact any of the board members if you are interested. Serving on the board is a great way to make changes and further serve south western Ohio school nurses and school children.
SWOSNA wants you to send them all the great things that you and your fellow school nurses. We would like to include these KUDOS and other tidbits in the newsletter, and websites. School nurses need to do a little more "tooting" their own horn.

You can fill out the membership form, write a check, and send it to the membership chair. You can also sign up for two years at a time and get a discount. If you are not sure if you are a member still or not, then please contact us to check it out.
Mikki Lukens has been starting to work on a scrapbook for SWOSNA. If you have some pictures from a recent meeting, or if you are a scrapbook guru then please contact Mikki at Michele.lukens@wright.edu. She would be happy to have the help.
Don't forget to register for the annual conference. It is at the Dayton Marriottt from March 3 through March 6th. The venue is really awesome this year. I have prepared the SWOSNA raffle basket, and the other regions will have one as well so you will want to be sure to take some chances on them.

SEOASN February 2011 Representative Report
Officers are: President Tammy Lorbach
Vice President Rachel Klaiber
Treasurer Angie Lewis
Secretary Lori Moore
State Rep. Annette Scott
South East has not had a meeting this year, but I have been trying to keep everyone updated on issues that affect us in general and as school nurses.
SE Treasurer Report:
There was currently $396.00 in the SEOASN account. Membership agreed at last meeting to increase their dues to $10.00 year.
Not included subtracted from the treasury will be the basket that Annette will take to the OASN Conference from SEOASN.
SE Rep Board Report:
I reported last time that I have been working with the SE region board for approx. 10+ years (V. Pres., President, and now Rep.). It is hard for us to get together and this year is the second year since I've been working with the South East Region that we were not able to meet at all. We've missed the fall meeting as well as the spring meeting.
I enjoy what I do and I'm always looking for new ways to present state information to the districts. At one of the board meeting it was addressed that East and South East are so small and OASN could assist us. Dr. Susan Praeger, from Wright State Univ. (also a member of the OASN Board) has offered us a way of staying together as a organization by participating on computerized CE programs for FREE; at least 4 CEs for 4 hrs. This is done either by "Skype" or a program called "Illuminate". I still need education on how this works, but I know it involves the computer and a camera-cam. More details on this can be provided if anyone is interested. I think it is worthwhile to have this program, and many can benefit from it. I hope this doesn't take away from our meeting at least once a year, but it is good to know that someone is offering us the chance to get CEs and stay together as a region. It all depends on YOU!!!
My wish is to have the nurses of SE continue to keep up with state issues, join the organization if you haven't already done so and continue to support the children of Ohio.
Diabetes: A Family Matter - WE NEED SCHOOL NURSES TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND GET INVOLVED IN THIS PROJECT. Nursing Professor Sharon Denham from Ohio University - Athens has been working on this program that focuses on the Appalachian area. She has set up the program, the website and the tools to produce a successful awareness program that she is encouraging all to utilize. If you have not been to the web site already, please take some time to see what she has worked so diligently on. http://www.diabetesfamily.net/

Nominations for Ohio School Nurse of the Year
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2011-2012 Ohio School Nurse of the Year Award. This award, which is the highest award presented annually by OASN, recognizes one school nurse who demonstrates excellence in school nursing practice and leadership in school health.
Candidates must be currently employed, full-time Ohio school nurses with at least five years experience. Active membership in OASN for the current and previous two years is required. The selections will be made on the basis of the school nurse's contributions to school health and school nursing practice. This would include clinical skills, creative programs, leadership, research projects, political and legislative contributions, and community and professional involvement. Evidence of excellence in school nursing practice will be based on Scope and Standards of Professional School Nursing Practice (2005, ANA).
The nomination forms take time to prepare and must involve the nurse being nominated...but it's not too late to start! Completed nomination packets are due June 15. Forms may be obtained from our website www.oasn.orgunder "AWARDS." Each region is encouraged to nominate a candidate. Individual members are also welcome to nominate a colleague. For more information, e-mail Mary Massey, awards@oasn.org.
Even if you are not considering a nomination for this coming year, take a look at the forms and criteria for selection as they appear online. It will give you an idea of all that is involved and a greater appreciation of the accomplishments of those who have earned the Ohio School Nurse of the Year Award! |
PAT BAUM SCHOLARSHIP: DEADLINE is AUGUST 1st

Baum Educational Scholarship Award is August 1st. The application is available on our website: www.oasn.org. Anyone working on an advanced degree or wanting to go to a conference or another educational opportunity needs to remember this potential benefit of OASN membership. |
Medication Administration in Ohio Schools: Training for School Personnel
Dawn Abbott, RN, BSN, M.Ed., LSN, NCSN
School Nurse Consultant
Ohio Department of Health
Ann M. Connelly, MSN, RN, LSN, NCSN
Supervisor, School Nursing Program
Ohio Department of Health
As many of you know, in 2009 the Ohio legislature passed House Bill 1 which included a change in school law regarding the administration of prescription medication (Ohio Revised Code 3313.713). Effective July 1, 2011, all school employees administering prescription medications in schools must either be a licensed health professional or be trained by one in a course that is approved by the local school board.
In response to the change in law, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) School Nursing Program developed a train-the-trainer program for licensed health professionals for use by licensed school nurses, public health nurses and other nurses working in Ohio schools to meet the new requirements. The training was reviewed by a panel of experts in the fall of 2009 and piloted during January and February 2011 in Wood, Vinton and Fairfield counties. Evaluations and feedback have been excellent. This training program will be released in the spring of 2011 and will be announced through the ODH School Nurse Bulletin Board.
Prior to this change in law, there has been no requirement for training of unlicensed school staff who administer prescription medications. While many nurses have been providing training to the other school staff on medication administration, there has been a lack of uniformity in training. This uniform medication administration training provides guidance for licensed health professionals to teach medication administration in the Ohio school setting based on state law and best practice. This ultimately helps ensure that students are safe at school. We all share the same goal: to develop healthy children who come to school ready and able to learn.
ODH's Medication Administration in Ohio Schools: Training for School Personnel train-the-trainer course for school nurses/licensed health professionals will provide CNEs and will be housed on Ohio TRAIN (a premier online learning resource for public health professionals found at https://oh.train.org ). This training supersedes the 2001 ODH Train-the-trainer instructional manual due to changes in the Ohio Revised Code 3313.713.
If you would like to receive e-mails from the ODH School Nursing Program's School Nurse Bulletin Board, including information about release of the Medication Administration in Ohio Schools: Training for School Personnel, please follow registration instructions by going to the ODH School Nursing Program Web site link at http://www.odh.ohio.gov/odhPrograms/chss/schnurs/guidepub.aspx and click on" ODH School Nurse Bulletin Board Registration Instructions." Please feel free to call me if you have any difficulty with the Bulletin Board at 614-644-0205. |
Free Preschool Vision Screening Training, Certification and Equipment Opportunity
Approximately 80 percent of what a child learns is learned visually. Early detection and treatment of vision disorders are important to maximize a child's visual potential. The longer eye conditions are left untreated, the more likely they are to worsen, affecting learning ability, athletic performance and self-esteem. Nationally, only 38% of three year olds are screened for vision problems. Well-child check ups offer the primary care provider an opportunity, on a yearly basis, to screen the child's vision for potential vision problems that can worsen and become more difficult to successfully treat if left until age six or seven.
"Vision problems affect one in four school-age children and one in twenty preschoolers, which is why regular vision care for children is so important," said Sherill Williams, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness Ohio.
To increase the visual quality of life for Ohio's children, Prevent Blindness Ohio is offering FREE 4 hour trainings that will provide instruction on how to perform preschool vision screenings, including:
- Instruction on how to perform stereopsis and distance visual acuity screening,
- Detailed information on childhood eye diseases and disorders,
- Preschool Vision Screening Guide for Healthcare Professionals: published in partnership with Prevent Blindness America and American Academy of Pediatrics,
- Preschool Vision Screening Guidelines: published by the Ohio Dept. of Health,
- Sample referral and follow up resources and access to no cost eye exams and eyeglasses for qualifying families.
Upon successful completion of the training, as well as a two-hour homework component, participants will be certified with Prevent Blindness America. Prevent Blindness America is the only organization offering a national certification program for pediatric vision screening and vision screening training.
Expectations of participants receiving Preschool Vision Screening Certification:
- To conduct vision screenings according to the established guidelines as presented in the training class,
- To document the number of children screened and referred to an eye care provider and to provide this information to Prevent Blindness Ohio, upon request, and
- To participate as requested in the Vision Screener's Survey conducted by Prevent Blindness Ohio.
Participants are also eligible to receive free vision screening equipment (a $300 value) that includes:
- Lea Symbol Chart for Screening for visual acuity
- Model A Good-Lite Visual Acuity cabinet
- Random Dot E stereopsis test
- Assorted children's vision care resources and brochures.
