Hard of Hearing or Deaf
Student in Your School?
Jane Klenk, RN, MSN, Columbus
Public Schools Nurse, has been appointed to the
board of directors of Deaf Initiatives. She would like to
get the word out about the great services available for
all deaf and hard of hearing (HOH) youth and families
statewide.
Deaf Initiatives offers support to families with deaf
and HOH children ages birth to twelfth grade. Age
appropriate workshops are provided regularly and are
offered free or at nominal fees. Klenk, who has a deaf
son, has attended programs and gives them high
marks.
Programs are paid in part by supporters but also by a
small business enterprise developed by Deaf
Initiatives. The company employs and trains deaf and
HOH job seekers. Statistics show that 60% of deaf
adults are unemployed. Deaf Initiatives vision is to
reverse this trend through all of their activities.
Please refer to the web site for additional information
www.deafinitiatives.org.
Klenk will also be happy to help with any related
questions and can be reached at 614-365-5824
during school hours.
Silent Auction Donations
Needed!
This will be our 3rd Annual Silent Auction. The
proceeds from the auction benefit the OASN
Scholarship Endowment Fund and are tax
deductible. Receipts are available upon
request .
If you have anything that you would like to donate to
the Silent Auction, that would be great! Think of what
you would like to see and bid on. Be creative! This is
your opportunity to re-gift something you received as a
gift that you would never use. If you are crafty, donate
a beautiful piece of your own artwork (knitting, crochet,
jewelry, etc.). Are you an independent consultant for a
company like Longaberger, Mary Kay, Pampered
Chef, etc.? Do you have connections with someone
who is a business owner and would be willing to
make a donation or gift certificate to our fine
organization (Who can say no to a nurse let alone a
school nurse!)? Last
year, Barnes and Nobles and Donatos were
wonderful business donors. Donating an item to our
Silent Auction does not have to expensive.
I ask that whatever you donate be new or gently
used/like new. We had many great sellers last year
including books, CDs, kitchen and home
accessories, Ohio State paraphernalia, Longaberger,
Mary Kay, Avon, Vera Bradley, jewelry, school nurse
items and clothing, and even clinic supplies.
I must receive all items no later than the first day
of
the conference. Please include the donor name
and
value of the item with the item. This information is
included with the item description at the auction. If you
cannot attend the conference, items can be sent
with someone else or mailed to me in advance.
Please email me if you plan to donate an item.
This helps me know how we are doing in securing
items for the
auction.
Thank you very much. I look forward to seeing you at
the conference. Sandy Urquhart, RN, MSN,

President's Message

Greetings to all OASN members! The past several
months have been a busy time in the life of the
OASN organization.
We are continuing with legislative efforts to
mandate school nurses in every school district in the
state of Ohio. This effort is being made with a group
of school nurses lead by Sam Whitaker. We met on
December 15, 2006 and January 12, 2007 in
Columbus to brainstorm ideas of what we would like
included in an omnibus bill for school nurses. We
have begun the drafting of language and met with a
representative of the governor’s office, John
Stanford, and Senator Stivers on Feburary 2, 2007 in
Columbus. We are at the first step in the process of
developing a bill that will be introduced into law.
More on the exciting initiative will follow.
I attended an interesting and informative
conference sponsored by NWOASN. They hosted
Deb Strouse for a day of discussion on Disaster
Preparedness. This was held in Findlay and was
attended by 40 NW Ohio members. There were many
positive comments about the usefulness of the
information and the trainer’s expertise. Good job,
Deb!!
Plans are being finalized for the March 21, 2007
Nurses Day at the Statehouse. OASN is a sponsor
for the day and we hope to meet with more
legislators concerning our efforts for mandating
school nurses. Registrations are still being taken at
the ONA website. If you are interested, please make
your plans soon, as they may reach maximum
capacity.
We are applying the finishing touches for
the "cruise" for OASN membership in the form of our
conference March 17-19, 2007. There are some
fantastic
classes planned and our keynote speaker is Pat
Cooper. He is a dynamic speaker and his message
on
coordinated school health is one that every school
nurse and administrator in the state should hear.
Therefore, do not be bashful, but invite
administrators in your school district to come and
hear what Mr. Cooper has to say. His keynote
speech is scheduled for Friday March 16, 2007 at
8:30am. This is one conference that you don’t want
to miss!!
The OASN board of directors will submit By-Law
revision proposals to the general membership at the
conference. There is a proposal to change the
length of the term of office for the
president-elect and president. Please watch for this
posting as a member alert and familiarize yourself
with these changes so that concerns can be brought
to the board at the business meeting on Saturday,
March 17, 2007.
These are busy times in the life of our
organization. I want to thank the executive board
and legislative task force members for all of their
hard work and support throughout the last couple of
months. Together we WILL get school nurses
mandated for all school districts!!
I welcome and encourage you to send
any questions, comments, or concerns to my email
address.
See you in Dublin, Ohio at the
OASN
conference!!
Sincerely,
Kathy Inderbitzin, RN, BSN, MEd.

Your Membership $$ at work for you!

OASN seeks every opportunity to educate others
about school nursing practice and the qualifications
needed to be a School Nurse in Ohio. One of the
ways OASN does this is by exhibiting in arenas where
we can display our exhibit and distribute materials on
school nursing and answer questions.
On November 13th and 14th of this past year, OASN
had an exhibit at the Ohio School Boards Association
Trade Show at the Columbus Convention Center.
This trade show offers an opportunity for a lot of
exposure as it is attended by school board members
and administrators across the state. Gabi Karpowicz
organized the first trade show display in 2004. Items
this year were generously donated for a “wellness”
basket by School Health, Inc. Love To Teach donated
items for raffle that displayed the “10 Top Reasons to
be a School Board Member”. The raffles were a great
way of pulling in school board members and
superintendents to discuss school nursing.
We heard many complimentary things about school
nurses across the state. Some superintendents had
questions about school nurse job descriptions and
qualifications for school nurses. The opportunity to
answer these questions made being there
worthwhile. We also learned that there was even an
expectation among some attendees that OASN would
be there representing school nursing in Ohio when
we heard comments like “I’ve been looking for your
booth”, “I was told to look you up”. We plan to return to
the OSBA Trade Show in the fall. Ask your
superintendent and school board members to look
us up. We’ll have another raffle for them!
In closing, many thanks to Judy Miller (pictured in
top
photo on left, opposite Renee Besecker) who
assisted with the set up/take down and manning the
booth, and
Barb Carpenter who stepped in to provide relief. If
your name is listed below, that means we saw one of
your school board members or your superintendent
and chances are they had something nice to say
about you!:

SWOSNA held its second General Membership
Meeting for the 2006/07 school year on November 16,
2006 at the Holiday Inn, Dayton Mall. Sixty-two people
attended the meeting. Linda Hilvert was honored with
a congressional certificate for being the Cameos of
Caring recipient. Susan Praeger was honored for
being the NASN School Nurse Educator of the Year.
Julie Kolde RN, BSN, NCSN presented a useful
presentation on “Integrating Technology Into School
Nursing Practice” for 1.3 CEUs. Members left the
meeting with many practical strategies to update their
school nursing practice through computer technology.
In January, the SWOSNA Board gave official support
to “An Agenda for Southwest Ohio’s Children, 2008-
09 State Budget Agenda.” SWOSNA will be listed as
an organization that assisted in the development of
the
Agenda and supports its contents. The Southwest
Ohio Child Advocacy Group is planning to hold a
briefing in late February for the Southwest Ohio
delegation in order to present the Agenda and have a
dialogue on the issues. The Agenda specifically
requests for funding in the budget for school nursing
services according to the standards set by NASN.
The wording reads:
“Pass and fund legislation that provides for school
nursing based on National Association of School
Nurses standards. Reason: School nurses are the
primary identifier and source of maintaining treatment
for children with chronic conditions such as diabetes
and asthma. Currently 55 school districts in Ohio
have no school-based health services. "
The next SWOSNA Board meeting will be March 1,
2007 at Sycamore Hospital. We look forward to
seeing all SWOSNA Members at the OASN Annual
Conference in March where we will celebrate the
honoring of our own Norma Nikkola as Ohio School
Nurse of the Year! We will also see everyone at the
Spring SWOSNA General Meeting on Tuesday, April
24, 2007, 4:30 PM – 7:00 PM, topic and place to be
announced.

Meet the Candidates for OASN..........

The candidates for offices of the Board of Directors of
OASN that need to be filled In March at our annual
conference are: President Elect and Vice President.
There is one candidate for each office, thus it is not
necessary to have an election by ballot. The new
President Elect term of office will be contingent upon
the general membership approval of the new by-laws.
If the by-laws are approved, then the new president
elect position will be installed at the 2008 annual

NASN Update

NASN NEWS YOU CAN
USE
NASN has arrived!! During the
NASN
Board of Directors meeting held in January we had an
opportunity to visit our new headquarters, located at
8484 Georgia Ave in Silver Spring, MD. The offices
are very attractive and most important, are
strategically located near public transportation in the
greater Washington DC area. Many other
organizations with similar interest in health and
education issues have their national offices near
by.
Our new NASN Ex. Director, Amy Garcia, is
aggressively pursuing grant money to secure
programs and relationships for NASN with other
agencies and corporations. NASN membership has
grown to over 14,000 members
and Ohio has 549 members.
The last paper exam for national board certification
for school nursing (NBCSN) will be given prior to the
annual NASN Conference in Nashville, TN. this
June. Web based testing will be done after
that.
To be more inclusive, NASN has established an
award
for a Private/Parochial School Nurse of the year.
There is also a discussion list serve for
Private/Parochial School Nurses. Check it out!
NASN conducted a School Nurse Staffing Survey.
This scientific investigation, surveyed school nurse
delivery systems in 1,055 schools in 50 states. Final
results will support local efforts for improved ratios of
school nurses to students.
Take the time to check out the NASN Website
(www.NASN.org), which has added many new
features that can be helpful to you in your School
Nurse practice, such as the following:
Grant resource page-Members only
An updated advocacy page
SNAMP (School Nurse Asthma Management
Program)- Trainers are ready for all states.
Research button linking School Nurses with
School Nurse educators and other experts in this
area.
A full membership on line survey will be
conducted
during February and March. Ten conference
scholarships will be randomly awarded to those
completing the survey.
Disaster Preparedness for School Nurses-At
least
16 more workshops are planned over the nest
year.
H.A.N.D.S. (Helping to Administer to the Needs of
the Student with Diabetes in School)

MAP-Managing and Preventing Diabetes and
Weight Gain Project
S.C.O.P.E.- School Nurse Childhood Obesity
Prevention Education Program. This replaces the
Healthy Weight program. A Grant has been submitted
for funding.
On line NCE (Nurse Continuing Education)- The
goal of NASN is to develop enough low cost NCE
offerings that will offset the cost of membership in
states that require NCE.
Influenza Vaccine- Considerations in Children:
This program will be free to the first 2000 school
nurses thanks to a grant from Sanofi Pasteur.
Access to an updated Diabetes IHP-it will also be
in NASN March Newsletter.
Remember to periodically check out Position

NEA and OASN discuss school nurse advocacy

In the January 2007 issue of NEA Today, an article
appeared entitled, “A Band-Aid Solution.” It was about
school health, but focused on non-professionals
providing health services to children. Shortly after
publication, NASN seized the opportunity to again
help educate NEA regarding school nursing. Sue
Will, Amy Garcia and Mary Louise Embrey were able
to meet with Reg Weaver, NEA President, and Allan
Jehen an NEA Today staff employee.
It was explained to them that in effect they
were “praising breaking state laws and Nurse
Practice Acts by supporting such activity as was noted
in the article.” They were reminded that a Resolution
was passed this July in support of our recommended
of a 1:750 ratio in a regular school population and
adjusted downward based on the health acuity of the
population served. NEA is encouraged to support
their local units in bringing school nurses into
representation at their levels.
As a result of this meeting, Amy Garcia, NASN
Executive Director, will be attending the NEA’s Health
Information Network meetings and there will be an
article co-written by NASN and NEA on what school
nursing SHOULD BE!
Grass roots effort should continue at all levels for
more individual involvement with our educational
local units and perhaps we should start saying that
not only does EVERY CHILD DESERVES A
SCHOOL NURSE but also that EVERY TEACHER
NEEDS THE SUPPORT OF A SCHOOL NURSE!

Promotional Activities for National School Nurse Day

School nurses across the country will celebrate
National School Nurse Day on May
9, 2007. This day was established to foster a better
understanding of the role of school nurses in the
educational setting.
The Public Relations
Committee of OASN has gathered several resources
to assist school nurses in their effort to publicly
promote this special day. Many ideas are listed
below. In addition, the latest edition of
the "Health Notes" (School Nurse Health Watch), has
a newsletter article that is available to print and
distribute to
families, board members, community members, etc.
A special resource web page at OASN.org will be
created so that school nurses can access other
publicity and resource information.
We
would also like to hear from you! What activities do
you have planned for National School Nurse Day? Do
you plan to contact a legislator or perhaps honor a
school nurse in a special way? Please email Rachel
Little, PR chairperson or Jennifer Ferris, Newsletter
editor with any information about school nurse

Endowment-Creating a legacy

The Columbus Medical Association Foundation
states
that, “Legacies (Bequests) are one of the simplest
and most commonly used methods of Charitable
Giving. They are convenient ways to give for many,
as they allow an individual to make a future gift
commitment while retaining full control of their
assets. A bequest through a will or trust can take
many forms. Below are some options available to
donors that can be used to make a gift to the OASN
Education and Research Fund through the Columbus
Medical Association Foundation:
- Specific Bequest: The donor places a provision in
his/her will or trust that directs a specific asset, a
list of assets, or a specific sum of money to be
distributed to the OASN Endowment Fund.
- Percentage Bequest: The donor places a
provision in his/her will that directs that a
percentage of their estate be distributed to the
OASN Endowment Fund.
- Residuary Bequest: The donor places a provision
in his/her will or trust that directs that the remainder
of this estate after all other provisions in his/her will
or trust are satisfied be distributed to the OASN
Endowment Fund.
- Contingent Bequest: The donor places a
provision in their will or trust directing assets to the
OASN Endowment Fund only if those named as
primary beneficiaries predecease the donor.
CMAF would be happy to work with you or
your advisors to develop bequest language and fund
descriptions that will be beneficial to you and the
OASN Endowment Fund. All information shared with
them is held in strictest confidence. Individuals
setting up a legacy become members of the
Foundation’s Legacy Society. Decisions regarding
any publicity related to any gift or potential gift is
left entirely to the donor.
Unlike cash or other outright gifts, a
bequest in a will or trust will not provide you with
income tax charitable deduction. However, your
estate will receive an estate tax charitable deduction
for the fair market value of your charitable
bequest.
The services of a competent professional
who specializes in this area and who is
knowledgeable of state law governing wills, trusts
and charitable gifts should be engaged to evaluate
your personal situation and provide technical
assistance needed to accomplish your goals.”
