Thanks for Giving a Hoot about Webster!

Thank you to all those who contributed to Webster's surgery last month. While it was a little nerve wracking, Webster came through with flying colors.

Below is a note from Kim Calcagno, Audubon refuge manager and raptor specialist, describing the surgery...

Webster went in about mid-morning for his surgery. They had brought in a special anesthetist for the procedure as birds notoriously do poorly under anesthesia. They called me back around 2 p.m. to come and get him. He was very loopy from the anesthesia. He spent the first night in his mew, but although he found his food, he really couldn't eat it on his own.

Went back the next day to the vets for a post-op check up. The vet was very pleased at how he looked. One of his irises prolapsed during surgery and is a bit misshapen now, but it's all worth it to have him still with us.

The pictures below are (left) just out of surgery and (right) Webster taken a day ago.

Webster after   Webster Post

Thankfully, you'll be able to see Webster at Raptor Weekend (September 11 & 12) at the Audubon Environmental Education Center in Bristol.

For now, he's on a little R & R. We are grateful to all our donors who came to our support when we needed you. We  raised the $1,700 for Webster's surgery in just a few short days, and, a little bit more to add to our Raptor Care Fund.

This fund provides for all our raptors, including an American Kestrel, Barred Owls, Red-tail hawk and Screech Owl - all unreleasable birds because of injury. This fund offsets the costs of food, medical treatment, maintenance of their mew (flight cage) and all other necessary care costs.

If you weren't able to make a contribution to Webster's surgery, but would like to support our Raptor Care Fund, please use the link below.

Again, thanks to everyone for giving a HOOT about Webster.

Good Birding,
Jeff
