The destruction of wildlife and habitats that is now occurring in the Gulf of Mexico and on the shores of the Gulf States is almost beyond comprehension. It brings back the nightmare we witnessed fourteen years ago when Audubon staff and volunteers assisted with the recovery and rehabilitation of oiled birds that were affected by the North Cape oil spill off Rhode Island's shores.

Even though that local incident might seem like a distant memory, trained Audubon staff members are still part of the organized responder group that is prepared to help should it happen here again.

This devastation in the Gulf only emphasizes the urgency to reduce our consumption of fossil fuels and develop clean alternative energy resources such as wind, solar and hydropower. While we can't ban fossil fuels altogether, as we did with DDT, we can work both collectively and individually to help reduce our dependence on them.

Think about how we all play a part in the saga that is happening in the gulf. Americans burn an amazing 378 million gallons of gasoline a day according to the U.S. Energy Information Agency. Consider biking or walking more this summer. Keep your tires inflated and drive more slowly. Enjoy fresh, local produce from a farmer's market.

By supporting Audubon's conservation, education and advocacy efforts here at home, you are helping to make a difference. Thank you.
