On Top of the World
Well, maybe not the world, but certainly on top of Rhode Island.
Yesterday, I spent most of the day on top of the Bank of America building in downtown Providence. Not because I was trying to cure my fear of heights, but because Audubon is working in partnership on an incredible new project that I know you will find pretty fascinating.
If you didn't know, there has been a man-made peregrine falcon nest a top the building since 1996. Built and installed by Joe Zbyrowski, a retired Coventry school teacher, the nesting box was installed under the supervision of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service during a national campaign aimed to bring the peregrine populations back after use of chemical insecticides had lowered their numbers.
The nest in Providence has produced 26 nestlings since the female laid her first clutch of eggs in 2000. Before her arrival, the last known successful peregrine nesting in Providence was on the same building in 1959.
Over the past few months, a new nesting box has been constructed and installed to replace the original. Yesterday, we installed two cameras that will allow 24/7 observation of the nest and nearby building ledge.
Once connected, and thanks to financial support from Bank of America, Audubon will host the streaming video from these cameras on our website. From the comfort (and ground level) of your home, you will be able to watch the peregrine falcon nest and hopefully the successful fledgling of new born falcons.
Our education staff is busy developing educational materials to allow schools to incorporate the video into new science lesson plans about peregrines and habitat conservation for this importance species.
I'll have more information to share about this video in upcoming weeks. Until then, here's a short video of the banding of the birds taken in 2008.
